lady present my son needs you guys
My son is 20 y/o. He is about 130 pounds too heavy....okay 150pounds. He is considering WLS. He says that he does not want to try anthing but the band. I dont think that is the best thing for him. I know guys love their meals and I am afraid he will hate the upchuck, miniscule lifestyle of the band. I need to hear from guys what you think. He needs to hear.
Anybody care to contribute. I am a mom. I know nothing period about anything ....even if I was an expert....you know moms..how they are.
no offense but he needs to come here and give us the real issues. he may be fine with the band. If that all he will even consider let him down that path. encourage him to research the band, as he does he will learn about the other options.
But he will do nothing if you don't get him started adn on here himself.
well...number one. He needs to be asking this stuff himself, he is 20 after all. If you attempt to do it all for him, in the end, you risk just setting him up for failure. I'm banded, dropped 100 pounds in my first year....then stopped. Mind you the Band didn't stop working...I stopped working the Band. Only your son will be able to voice if it will work for him or not. The good thing about it, you can go for a "fill" and get that fresh start, hoping "this time" for me will be the one that gets me to goal, but you see...now I've learned to not set my goals in 100's...my new goal is to see that next 10 drop off, then the next, the next...etc.
have you boy drop in...I've been away for a bit, but it's usually a pretty welcoming room!
HI ya.
I agree that your son should come on here and ask the questions he wants.. but personally im not a fan of the lapband, when i did my research on it i didnt feel that i would be able to live with the restrictions it places on you, plus the various stories you hear about bands slipping, leaking or just generally causing issues.
There should be more than enough people on these forums to offer some good advice.
I was a bit like your son, im 32 now and only just getting my surgery, ive chosen the Vertical sleeve, but during my 20's i thought to myself, "oh theres no way i would have anything other than the lapband", then i started reading more and more, and finally years later ive made a decision ( there were other factors like money which stopped me from getting the surgery earlier, and a mental battle i faced to accept that i just couldnt drop the weight any other way ). i was/am 50/60 kgs over my ideal weight ( about 120 pound i think that equates to )
So for years i went down the gym/sport/drugs route trying to drop weight, and all along this time i thought lapband, lapband..
All i can say is that your son should explore all the options.. dont get fixated on just one surgery until he knows the complication each can have.
theres also some 20's forums on here, he might like to post there and see how peoples lives are with each surgery. They can give you there opinions about the surgery and the social effects it had for them..

I'm always happy to chime in when asked! ;-) If your son is 130-150 lbs overweight, he probably is a candidate for WLS. Yes, he will hate the upchuck and side effects but that's partly the point - the band and surgeries help change the lifestyle behaviors that caused him to get morbidly obese. I don't think many people would disagree when I say that the benefits of losing that excessive weight will be far better for him than the changes it will require of him.

Wow! Hey Jim you're looking great! Congratulations! To my other brothers of days past...my only excuse is I let my life get in my way again. Not Dave, like I said though, it wasn't the BAND that stopped working. I had allowed myself to slide back into some old habits, and develop a couple new ones. I'm not gaining the weight back on, well..5 - 10 pounds in the last year, so all is not lost for me.
I'm back, my new schedule (finally finished classes and was ordained in August) will keep my inputs limited I think, but I'm still "out there", and thank all you oldies for your support!
