Eating to live after WLS.........

One of the true benefits I see for myself after WLS is my desire for the right foods. Pre-surgery, I was nothing more than a carbohydrate and sugar consumer with hardly any desire for anything good. These days I actually crave and love salads and fruit and vegetables. It's amazing the changes that happened. Sometimes I can't believe I really had this surgery because of how scared I was of dying on the table, but I knew I was killing myself slowly with a fork and spoon anyway.

Saturday my son graduated from college in San Antonio we went to Chesters of all places to celebrate. (His Choice) Before WLS usually 2 Bacon Cheese Burgers Onion Rings Sweet Tea and top it off with a Vanilla Malt. Yesterday 1/2 of cheese burger no bun, two onion rings and regular tea before the meal. My how things change and I was delighted to play with my Grand Kids!!

Triple...me too on the salads and veggies thing. Had about 2 oz of filet last nite and reminded myself that my old love affair with steak is LONG GONE! The flesh is too "tight" for me to enjoy...that is I have to chew it up so much it turns into a plug of nothing...and I do not even like swallowing same. I have thought about just chewing up a nice chunk of steak, and then spitting it out even, to try to "re-start" my love affair with red meat....but that was an empty idea. I still didn't like steak. Nor pork. Nor veal. Meat in general, seems to have lost all it's appeal. I did have 2 helpings of caesar salad tho last nite and that was SO SO SO enjoyable. Veggies are also a big big thing for me too! Never much liked desserts, or any real sweet items. Used to love a piece of fresh rye bread with ice cold butter slabbed on it...but now I can only eat like 2 or 3 bites.... Food changes I suppose....Dx can you offer some info here? Jim

That's odd ..  I know I have actually lost all taste for fruits and veggies after surgery, but hunger big time for protein (maybe it's a DS thing???)  ..  My carb cravings have also started to return, unfortunately ..   &:-(...

Thankfully I have no real cravings anymore.  I do like to eat nuts now, more than ever, and I also like corn for some reason, which I was never a big fan of before.

Not sure if this fits in with the topic, but I eat every three hours like clockwork to keep the metabolism going. If I've sweat a lot, then I'll drink anywhere from 32-64 oz of water beforehand. I always make sure that I get 3-4 tablespoons of omega-3 fat (flax oil or fish oil) in the mornings. I mix it with salad dressing and eat it with cabbage and almonds (great stuff!), the roughage, I figure will help it to absorb.

Now, that's eating to live. I also get 200-250 grams of protein, mostly in the form of pureed chicken in chicken salad OR in the form of salmon sashimi.

Best Wishes,

Dave
