Tube feeding concerns

I am in the hospital and yesterday they inserted a g tube for feeding. I have a stricture, they dialated last week, perferated let air out not fluids, stricture closed back up. They want to wait a month to re dialate. Anyway the nut wants me on a 1200 calorie a day diet. I am very concerned with this before I was on 600-700 per day (i am 6 weeks out). 1200 calories through my old stomach without the bypass I am afraid that my weightloss will come to a grinding halt. The nut says they want to make sure that I heal. If that is the case why dont they send us home from the hospital on 1200 cal per day after they rearrange our plumbing if that will help us heal. I asked the dr he says that is what the nut reccomended.  Any advice?

Jon, That was about the level my intake was set at When I was on a feeding tube (for 4+months) And my weight kept right on coming down. Even up to 1600 to 1800. What’s the stuff they are pouring in the bag? Mine was Promote-with Fiber. Fine when going through the tube, But tried a sip or two? Eeeek!  Like raw chicken in a blender with a shot of vanilla flavoring. Gag a maggot! Sorry to hear you had a stricture. Though I’ve seen many who had them dilated Over the course of a few months and end up in tip-top shape. Hang in there! (feeding tube going in through hole in your belly/side? Keep it Crazy clean and germ free!) Best Wishes- Dx

They have me on jevity. The tube is going in the same spot in my upper stomach just under the rib cage where the tube was after surgery.

Thanks for the input Dx. I am hoping this will only be a 4 week situation but only time will tell. They seem really gunshy about dialating the stricture again because of the perf last time. I am glad to hear that the weight kept coming off even with the higher calorie count.

They started the tube feedings last night and it seems that they may keep my close to the restroom. I guess liquid in = liquid out.

"...close to the restroom." When they bring it in again, take a peek at the label. I'll bet 5 American Dollars, it is "fiber-fortified."  Mine was. And that's a good thing.  Keep those bowel moving. Hope to hear you are up and hittin' on all cylinders soon. Best Wishes- Dx

Hey Jon.... Ok here are a couple of things to think about..... the FDA diet is 2000 calories a day....so you are still under the "Norm" by a good bit...plus this crap is nutritionally balanced...not too much this or that...so it will have pretty low fat.... nuts are generally pretty ridgid...so I do think you concerns are valid...as an alternative....as the doc direct...as if you absolutely need all those calories... and point it out like you did to us...Why did you send me home one one thing and now another.... When all is said and done...you wanna be healthy...and people direguard what nuts say all the time....(if we had all listened to out nuts we would never have gotten heavy) I guess you need to see how you feel, versus how the scale moves for you....I mean you are in control ...I don't think the nut is coming to you house 5 times a day and forcing you to pour this stuff in you... Just be healthy first... keep us posted Russ
