RNY or Lapband?? 2 months to decide
I faced a similar decision, and ultimately financial considerations led me to the RNY over the band (insurance paid, similarly, financial considerations would have led to the band had I been self-pay, since it's cheaper). That said, I have been ecstatic with the results of the RNY. I said I didn't care about losing "fast," but being 150 pounds down in under eight months has been really cool, and there may be something to be said for losing fast: it helps prevent impatience, which may help you maintain good habits rather than respond badly due to frustration.
Essentially, I see the advantage of the band as being a lower incidence of complications. It's a pretty safe surgery, and most people are back to work pretty fast. Also, it's more easily reversed, should you ever have such a need. As for the risk of fatality/complications, I think that was minimal for me because I had a top surgeon and am young and healthy, so that helped to neutralize the band's main advantage.
Once you are past the initial complications stage, I think the RNY provides better restriction and easier (though not foolproof) compliance necessary for success (it's harder to eat around RNY). For sweets eaters, the RNY definitely has advantages, given that many people get negative feedback. I'm not one of those people, but I also was mainly a bulk eater, and now I simply eat much less and don't care.
As you can see, the DS/sleeve surgeries are fine options and have ardent proponents, but I assume since you didn't mention it's not an option for your insurance. On the spectrum, it is an even more complicated surgery with potentially more immediate complications, but does have great long term results for very obese people.
Lap-band for me - lost 100 pounds in 1.5 years. Fills are not an exact science - filled too tight does cause reflux. The pouch can prolapse, the esophagus can dilate. My band did slip and had surgery to restitch it last month, but I was ready to have another band if he couldn't restitch it. I was a quantity eater so the lap-band really protects me from myself. No matter which you choose, the mind needs to be adjusted as well. Your eyes will really be bigger than your stomach! do research, read studies, read the good and the bad about all the procedures, and make the best decision for you. good luck
I have not had the surgery yet, but my primary physician told me the best thing for me personally is the RNY. He said he knows what a problem he has getting me to come in to see him, he can just imagine what my WLS doc would go through. According to my doc, the Lapband requires more doctor visits for followup. My doc knows I don't go to docs often. Also, just as others said, the loss is quicker with RNY and it is more permanent.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!
