Evaporated Cane Juice?

Hi Guys, Can RNY folks have evaporated cane juice?  My wife picked up a new cereal, Kashi, and it has this listed as an ingredient.  It comes third in the listing and there are 13g of sugar total.  Normally, I'm only supposed to have 2 grams of sugar unless it comes from a natural source.  And, Kashi says on the box that it is all natural. Has anyone had this cereal and what were your results?

Hey Jim, It’s “Un-Refined Sugar.” ”Sugar in the Raw” is the brand of “Evaporated Cane Juice” They keep at Starbucks to add to Coffee.

I don’t know it’s effect as far as dumping is concerned. It has other nutrients in it still, un-like refined sugar. (vitamins and such) And it has a slightly lower glycemic index so it doesn’t Spike blood sugar levels Quite as fast as White sugar. Still, if you are a “dumper” try smaller portion than the full 13gs sugars. I use the Kashi “GoLean” type. Only 5gms sugar per 1 cup. I have half a cup stirred into some SF Yogurt, and it’s great. I also used to use Kashi “Heart to Heart.” But about the same as Cheerios Multi-Grain, Which has a few less grams of sugar. Heart to Heart is 5gms per ¾ cup Cheerios is 6 gms per full cup. And the Cheerios have more been “fortified” With more added Vitamins and minerals. Sometimes the “Green / Organic” stuff, Is not quite as nutritious as the plain old “General Mills” Or Kellogg’s brands…. All about the labels….. Best Wishes- Dx

Dx, Thanks for your response.  It may be worth it to try the Heart to Heart or Go Lean versions.  I'll let you know what happens.

Hey Jim - Remember that each of us is as unique and individual post-op as we were pre-op. What works for me may be entirely different for you.  Example - 8 oz glass of Tropicana OJ has 22 G sugar (natural) and I can chug it like there's no tomorrow.  However, if I go after more than one Hershey's Mini which average 4 G sugar (refined) each - it's a one way ticket on the DumpVille Express. Unfortunately, we all have individual learning curves to go through.  For me, natural sugar is no problem and I would not hesitate to take on the Kashi.  In fact, Kashi snack bars are a big part of my "munchies" regimen and I have not had a problem to date. Danny,

Thanks for your response.  You are right that our experiences can very.  I actually can handle orange juice, but I have not tried hershey's or candy.  I think I'll give the Kashi a try.

My experience with Kashi has all been bad, not because of sugar but because of bugs in products. I bought three different boxes at different times bugs in all of them. Just my experience!!

Well, I tried it out.  I didn't dump, but I had a lot of gas throughout the day.  I had a whole bowl.  Maybe next time I'll have a half bowl or put some in yogurt like Dx suggested.

I also checked the box for bugs.  I'm happy to report no bugs were found.
