Alcohol
Hi Guys,
I am 11 months out and down 110 pounds. Feel great!! Last weekend I had a mixed drink at a party I was at and felt the buzz almost immediatly. I was kind of surprised... My question is, would I be considered intoxicated or is my blood alcohol level still below the limit.
I myself would never consider driving with this kind of feeling - had the wife drive, But was curious about the technical aspects of this...
thanks,
There's a couple of things going on here but I read a few months ago a study done about this. They compared people of the same size. Some had the bypas and some did not. Those having the bypass almost always tested above the legal limit after 1 drink. The other thing that impacts is that you're also so much less in weight that you would be impacted quicker. Between those 2 things it looks like we have to be careful.
I've only had a handful of drinks in the last 5+ months but noticed also that it impacts me much quicker.

Hi -
Alcohol is tricky for many post WLS'ers. Since it doesn't stay in the stomach like it would normally, it gets absorbed into the bloodstream much faster. Stanford did a study on this phenomenom this past summer. Basically your blood alcohol content raises much faster post WLS so it's wise not to drink more than one drink and to drink it slowly. Here's a link to the study I'm referring to:

Jp had "the goods" on this one, As do others. It is absorbed faster, taking blood alcohol levels up much quicker. Quick Link To The Study Best Wishes- Dx

I noticed the buzz sooner too. I don't know what this means, but it takes more alcohol to give me that buzz. I never drank alcohol other than an occasional beer or maybe one drink while out to dinner before my surgery, so have no idea why I do now. But another thing is that mixed drinks can contain up to 500 calories or more. I for one never knew how much they could contain. Maybe that's where the term beer belly came from. ha ha Just think of all the healthy stuff you could eat instead for those empty calories.
