Chest pains Round 2

Back in December of 06 I had some severe chest pains that I was sure was going to be a heart attack . When I got into the ER they gave me a nitro patch and the pain went away. They did several tests and could never come up with a reason or cause of the chest pains. Well last Tuesday when I was lifting at the gym I started getting light headed and my heart felt like it was going to jump out of my chest. They have a heart rate monitor on the desk at the gym and I checked my pulse and jumped up to 160 and it took about 10 minutes before my heart rate came back down below 100 and another 10 minutes for it to return to normal. After that I felt fine and finished my workout without no problem. Then the same thing happened again on Thursday, and just like before I rested for about 20 minutes and was fine. I just thought maybe I have been pushing myself to hard or something. Then on Saturday I woke up and just walked from the bedroom to the computer, and started getting chest pains again, they weren’t as bad as in the gym so I just went on doing things around the house and the pain would let up some and then get worse then let up again. So after some encouragement from my wife I decided to go to the ER to get checked. Well same deal as before they gave me some nitro and the pain quit. They decided to keep me until Monday so they could do a stress test. Come Monday morning my doctor came in and told me after reviewing all my blood tests and EKG’s he could find noting to indicate anything wrong with my heart and there was no need to do the stress test., and sent me home. The only things he could think of was the fact I started drinking Coffee, or maybe the stress of weight lifting is causing my muscles in my chest are putting pressure on my heart???????. Have any of you guys ever had any problems with chest pain from lifting??????? Botttom line the doctor said go back to my regular routine and if I have any more chest pains take a nitro pill and see if that relives the pain and give him a call.

I've had similar things happen to me.  My Dr didn't seem very concerned but he said that if it is recurring I'd need to be tested for cardiac arrhythmia (link to description here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiac_arrhythmia)  I had occasionally had times where my heart would race for no apparent reason even when quietly reading in bed, for example, which is what sent me to the Dr. in the first place.  At present, I'm just keeping track of when it happens so I can give the info to the Dr. It's never a bad idea to have a second opinion if you aren't completely sure your Dr. is concerned enough. I'm assuming that you went to see a Cardiologist.  If not, please do so.  If so, get a second opinion.  If nitro glycerin actually helps the pain, then the heart is probably causing the problem.  I made a trip to the ER last year for severe pain that started in my shoulder and went down my arm.  Nitro did nothing to ease my pain, which they indicated was a good thing!  They sent me to a Cardiologist and had me do a stress test with some sort of nuclear medicine/dye injected while I was on the treadmill.  Then they did some sort of scan on my back and on my stomach to take pictures.  The result was my heart was functioning well.  The pain was actually caused by some hermiated discs that I have in my neck, which I am able to control with regular neck exercises.  Anyway, I wonder if they didn't do the stress test because of the cost....it was somewhat expensive.  If you don't improve, go back and demand that they figure it out; you need to be proactive in your medical care these days or necessary interaction will go undone with bad consequences resulting.

Keep a close eye on that buddy!   Although the Docs not found anything to be the cause, that's not something to be toying with.  Your heart surely has taken one hell of a beating over the years and spikes like that can really do a number on you if you're not careful.  Cut out that caffeine prior to your workouts to see if that makes any difference.  Question for you...is this happening while you're in the pool at all or is it only when you're lifting weights?  And if it's only during weights, any particular point in your workout where it's occuring? Be sure to notate on your workout chart what you were doing at the time just to see if you can see any correlations. Take care! CF

I’m with Mike H, If the Nitro is helping, then Something is there. -Even if they haven’t found it yet. Does that Nitro give you a headache like you were just hit in the head with a baseball bat? Mine used to. I sometimes would rather have the chest pain than the head pain….. Doc after Doc looked my heart over my whole life.  Only one clever Cardiologist found the problem that I had lived with since birth, when I was 47! Stay on top of this one…. Best Wishes- Dx
