I know this is a men's forum-- but I need help!

I need the advice of men for what seems to be a men's issue. I hope you will not mind. My sig ot and I decided to both undergo RNY back in January, after getting the go-ahead from our respective insurances. The story's on my profile, but the long and short of it is that I had mine in July, he had to do the six month Aetna protocols first--- and was denied after all his testing and hard work because despite their initial go-ahead, his employer actually has an exclusion. Heartbroken doesn't even come close-- but that's a story for another time. For now, he needs to continue diet and exercise as his sole recourses. Pre- op, we both dieted.  I weighed 368 (at 5'5") and lost 68 pounds from March to mid-July on a 1200 calorie diet (about 50% carbs, 30% protein or more 20% or less fat).  My boyfriend weighed 379, and lost 50 pounds in the same time period eating similarly, but eating 1600 calories a day. Problem is, he's having been plateauing at 330 pounds for almost two months now. He exercises MUCH more vigorously than I do-- 45 minutes a day of high resistance exercise biking, plus walking and some light weight training. I know that he has been compliant. He *does* have a hard time getting his heart rate high due to the blood pressure meds he is on, but exercises full out and sweats profusely when he does. Clearly he has to change-up his routine somehow, but since he's no longer in the RNY program, we have no access to a nutritionist any longer and his insurance does not pay for one locally. Any advice from the men on board here as to where he should be headed next to break this stall and get back on track?   Thanks, and again-- pardon the intrusion.

My suggestion, is he should come here to this board and see how we cope, on a day today with the weight loss problems. We would be more available to give support directly to him..It works better direct and not through a thrid party....It gives him the chance to feel he is in control, and not just bing told what to do.... We welcome all brothers, pre op, post op, non op... Tell him he has a whole army of support..just log on Russ

I tried that before (many times!)--but  his spare time's pretty limited (he has 8 kids!) and he's not as social as I am. I will re-extend the invite-- thanks!

i would echo russ if he can come here for help but i understand about time pressure. ask if he is getting in his protien. protien can actually aid in weight loss. also, his body is figuring out it's starving and is trying to get back to where he was weight wise. so he has to not give in and try to break the stall. given enough time it will break but he has to be strong. i would push for just a reduction of 500 calories a day and lose the weight very slow. so it's more a lifestyle change than a diet. this way the body might not think it's starving and keep the weight off for good. also, have him try several 200 calorie meals a day to keep his sugar and energy level. he won't store fat if he keeps eating all day.

stalls are just a part of life with all of us. we just have to dig in and deal with it. it's no fun. this is usually the time we feel like we're starving and give in and say the hell with it. tell him he can beat it and support him like you do now. he's lucky he has someone who knows the story and the score. good luck.......carbonblob

Exact amundo, GM!! Well said -- shouldn't have to say something which is so obvious, should you? By the way, big Simpsons fan here so I really like you photo. Also, isn't San Dimas the home of Bill and Ted as in Bill and Ted's excellent adventure? Boner

As a matter of fact I live right behind San Dimas High School. Did you know not one second of that film was actually filmed in San Dimas? kinda weird huh. Another weird connection we have is I am moving to CO next summer. Was out there 2 weeks ago looking at neighborhoods. We will be neighbors soon.. I love it out there.

I suppose you have a point-- but again, as a single father with 8 children, and using what little spare time that remains for fitness, I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask if anyone had any specific  suggestions that might help. It appears I was wrong, and again, am sorry.
