Met my surgeon, Dr Dyer on Friday for the first time.

After & if the insurance approves the WLS, he wants to do a couple of more tests, one is to do with my legs/veins/blood clots risk, and the other on my lungs?

But hopelessness filled my entire being when he mercilessly verbalized the words of…

                3 week liquid diet.

I’ve not been on any type of liquid diet since my navy days and I don’t think he’s talking about the same thing! LOL

But seriously I knew I would most likely be put on one because of how the weight loss benefits your WLS, but the difficulty of the diet is that

I just don’t believe in myself enough to do it.

Hey G,

You can do it! If for no other reason, the diet is extreme and extreme works. Losing weight has to become one of your top priorities now, so why not decide to "go the extra mile"? Take that diet a step further, go for long walks every day (or other exercise as your physical condition permits), don't eat anything after 5-6:00 p.m. until your first liquid the next day. And most important, do whatever you can to get excited about it. You're looking at some big changes in quality of life if you succeed, so you have every reason to get excited.

Best Wishes,

Dave

DUDE! You have been through basic training, and your sweating three weeks of liquids?  Don't sweat it. Remember what it was like back then when you could run two miles, and do the push ups it took to graduate basic? Remember how it felt? That feeling comes back!!! It is soooo worth it. Later you can kick the liquids to the curb. I havnt drank that cra%p in months. Dont give up!   Peace Buzz

Before judging someone, first walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you do judge them you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

I don't know what to say other than you just do it.  We have all failed at diets, but the reason we fail is that, for a diet to work, you have to do it forever and eventually we hit a ceiling.  It begins to seem hopeless, in that you each day you "realize" that even if you don't fail today you'll fail eventually.  But you're talking about a diet with a definite endpoint, and a close one at that. In the months before surgery when I knew I'd get insurance approval, I went on a last hurrah eating tour, eating thousands and thousands of calories.  In the three weeks before WLS after I had approval, I kicked it into gear and lost 25 pounds.  I knew it was only a few weeks, and then the surgery would take over and give me a reprieve.  My only regret now is that I didn't start a couple months earlier and drop 50 or even 100 pounds preop like some of the guys on here.  Every day obese when I could have been at goal irks me, now that I can see a future when "at goal" isn't a temporary visit. So remember a few things. 1. You're about to have a surgery that makes lifelong healthy weight maintenance a realistic goal.  2. You will still enjoy eating after surgery, so there is no need to worry about missing out on eating now.  3. Every pound lost preop reduces the risks of the surgery.  4. A pound lost preop is almost certainly a pound lost forever.  Unlike with any other diet you've done, you will be rewarded 100% for your efforts.  5. Other than in the couple months right after surgery, you will never again be able to lose as fast as you can pre-op.  A few weeks of effort preop can save you dozens of weeks above goal post-op.

Lots of benefits to the old liquid diet prior to WLS. You mentioned lowering the risk of the surgery which is huge but the pre-op diet will also increase the odds of success post-WLS and will make the transition to your new, healthier life style much easier. You can do it, man --- go for the brass ring! Boner

3 weeks seems like for ever. But it will pass. There is an end to it! Put X's on a calendar or what ever. After the 3 weeks it only gets better. Just tell yourself that you can do this; no buts about it, just do it. You'll be the better man for it and you'll be better off physically and mentally to undergo the surgery. Everyone one of us felt as you do now when we were told about the liquid diet. Some version of, "If I could do that I wouldn't be in this mess," I suppose is what you're thinking. For me, that pre-surgery diet was the worst part. Just pay your "dues", its worth it!!
