Hi Guys, Just curious if there is any research information about Splenda and it's long term effects. I remember some issues with artificial sweetners causeing cancer a while back. Does anyone have any info on Splenda? Am I being overly cautious/convcerned? I got the band so I could be around for my family for a long time, I don't want to wind up with some kind of cancer because of it. Thanks, Chris the worry wart.

I haven't been able to find any negative information on Splenda. I consume it everyday. It's the only sweetner I use. Actually, I like the way Altern tastes better. It's the off-brand of Splenda that Wal-Mart carries. It's about 1.50 cheaper for the 5 lb. bag.  Ron

Wow, I used to work with a lady that was deathly afraid of nutrasweet because she firmly believed it would cause cancer, even if consumed very infrequently.  Someone told her so, so she believed it.  She used to tell me I was going to get cancer because I was drinking diet pepsi or diet mountain dew all the time, then go outside every hour or so to smoke her menthol virginia slims! I think Splenda is the best artificial sweetner to date, both in terms of flavor, or should I say, lack of a bad aftertaste, and in terms of versatility, because you can bake and cook with it fairly well.  I'm sure its like anything --- used in moderation, it's probably fine.  When you start using massive amounts, it might cause trouble.  However, if artificial sweetners were the be all and end all, maybe we wouldn't have such an ongoing and increasing weight problem in this country.  I DO think that the use of artificial sweetners increases the craving for sweets. The web link to the anti-splenda site is interesting.  As far as being concerned because Splenda contains chlorine atoms, well, almost all food contains chlorine, because living organisms all use good old sodium chloride to regulate cell membrane function and other things, if I remember my high school and college biology classes.  Dan Full of Chlorine, Not Dead Yet.

Splenda is obviously much better than processed sugar but it gives me the runs something territble. Here's a good summary on the side effects for non-WLS people so take these side effects and double the impact for us. "I can tell you that for some of us, eating more than one product with Splenda in a single day makes me feel as though I've taken a laxative. And if I have three or four, I'm likely to spend most of my evening in the bathroom with stomach cramps."

It's all I use. It's pretty much the only artificial sweetner that I think you can use 1 for 1. the others are too damn sweet.

Chris, I am reminded of---- Ban DHMO... Get the Facts: http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html

Of all of the artificial sweetners, Splenda gets the least "this is evil" internet chatter. My sister is a Convinced Organic Only consumer And even she has some Splenda, and little bad to say about it. But, she will use Stevia in Tea and oatmeal and such.

There are studies that show that it is the "Taste Sensation" Of sweetness, that triggers the sensations of more hunger And food cravings. So cutting back on sweets (artificial or not) Actually cuts back on the cravings for more sweets. Best Wishes- Dx

Hey Dx, Thanks for the warning about the DHMO!  I will keep my eyes out for it and try to stay away from it (I hope I don't start to smell too bad). My wife will surely object.  I understand that avoidance of DHMO is a good way to increase personal space.
