Protein absorbtion question
I think Dx has some material on this subject, but I personally believe this theory is just that...a theory that is unsubstantiated.
I'm 50/50 on this subject...I really don't subscribe to the theory but I will admit that superstition prevails and I take in higher amounts of protein to get in my targeted daily allotment.
I get the majority of my protein in through Whey Protein Isolate (typically shakes) so I have a bit more flexibility with what I eat...don't get me wrong I do behave myself with my diet, but if it's not super high in protein at times, it's not an issue.
In addition - it seems to me that getting protein through a Whey Protein Isolate, the absorption rate would be much higher than the system having to break food down (meat, cheese, eggs, etc) and extract the protein...therefore absorption would be higher and faster. So, here's where I'm 50/50 with it ...I might agree that the body can only absorb x-amount of protein through food, but believe it can absorb much more through Whey Protein Isolate (and some other proteins).
I may be completely off-base with my assumptions...but until I see medical/scientific proof I'm going to use it as my personal "rule of thumb" which has served me well thus far.
This is a great topic that I always like seeing the discussion on!

Hey Ted
I can not beleive this exact question was on the Texas board, this past week...I never get to cross post on something like this...
here is their question...and my response
maybe it will help
Russ
Ok, so I was told on the main board that even if we drink a protein drink w/ 35g of protein, we will not absorb all of it. How much will we absorb and then how soon after that absorbtion can we get in more protein that will absorb? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I need some info!!!!!! Thanks a million!
here is my response
I have to disagree with the main board....(imagine that)...I have been witha group of people and we havve scoured the internet looking for data on this topic....
I find nothing that says you will malabosrb if you take in too much protein....now body builders are even more fanatical than us about nutrition....don;t you think they would balk if someone was selling a product they could not absorbe...ie 42 gram protein shot......
any nut (nutritionist) i have questioned about this has the agrument...why would you want to get all that protein in at one time...? that is not a sufficient argument....and they could never point to a written book that said this.....
I am very open to changing my mind on this topic if someone can show me then documentation... but for this is an urban legend...
but what I can tell you....if being a rny pt...if I over do the protein shot...I will feel bad and bloated...but that is different from me not absorbing it....
Ok people....i'm open to someone to prove me wrong
hope this helps
Russ
