Diabetes medications?
I don't have a date yet but was wondering... I'm on medications for diabetes. If I skip a meal now my sugar readings go way low. What will happen when I'm on my liquid pre-op and post-op diets? Will they adjust my meds? I know after surgery I'll probably eliminate some if not all of those meds. But till then... Who's in control.. my WLS Dr or my PCP??
Hi Bill,
I was on 3 meds for diabetes prior to surgery. When I started the liquid diet my surgeon said to keep a close on on my blood sugar, and to even have a little oj on hand in case it goes too low. As she said this will be the only time I'll tell you it's ok to drink juice. If I had any problems with it I was to call my diabetic doctor.
After the surgery when I was released she told me not to take any of my diabetic meds. I also had appointments set up right after surgery with my pcp and diabetic doctor, which the surgeon recommended, and they agreed also to stop the diabetic meds.
So it will be up to your doctors how to handle things, but in my case right after surgery the surgeon was in charge and then I did follow-ups with the other doctors.
Hope this helps.

that is a loaded question, it depends on how far you are into your diabetes, what med you are on, and WHAT surgery you have, I fear this subject most, as there is a war about which surgery is best, on diabetes I will post the links and suggest you do the research.

number 67 says cures diabetes. http://www.level1diet.com/research/s/50/q/after%20biliopancreatic
this surgery may not be right for you or may not be available, insurance can be difficult for this procceedure, tricare will not, Aetna just started to cover. many self pay in Brazil or Mexico. I could of had a RNY but physically cannot, but the insurance company insisted that's all they would pay for. go figure. still preopt.

what is LOW bs, any number be low 50 require a boost immediately, below 30 I would expect that 911 be summoned and some one administer glucose in the form of liquid sugar, OJ,apple juice, non diet cola, ectra, or better yet, glucotabs, IF YOUR CONCERN ABOUT HAVEING HYPERGLYCEMIC EPSODES, you should carry glucose tabs, they are measured fast acting, don't spoil, . the importance is the MEASURED, PART, keeping track of how many u take will help in getting back on track with your med that much easier.
YOU are in control. When you know that your carb intake is going to be lower than normal, I suggest that you reduce your meds on your own. BUT you must buy some extra test strips and test more often to determine how you are doing. Yes, having a sugar source close at hand is necessary. I have eliminated all of my diabetes medications so far and have not seen my PCP yet. I have an appointment next week, but getting permission can often take way too long.
