post VSG 7 months = 70 pounds

There are few VSG males out there so I thought it may be of interest to others that today I am 7 months post op with a weight loss of 70 pounds.  With a starting weigh of 280 on a 5' 11'' frame, I have now a weight of 209-210 and am no longer considered obese.  For those studying WLS, you may wish to consider the sleeve.  For me, I have had, what I believe to be great success, without any problems.  The VSG leaves one with a reduced stomach, very little hunger and no need for any supplemental proteins.  While I do not know what my 2 or 3 year outcome will be for certain, I am confident in the procedure.  I personally believe it would be difficult to force enough k-cal into the body to regain my former weight.

My doc does some "sleeves", but then he likes to add a bypass to it, either right away or later on, as a second procedure. My understanding is, that you have the side of your stomach remaining in an elongated "sleeve" shape, with the pyloric valve in tact. This valve must allow you to stay full until the stomach empties 3-4 hours later?

Is that correct?

If so, sounds like a good operation. Of course, there is no remaining stomach, only a single elongated "sleeve" version of the original stomach.

Best Wishes,

Dave

the VSG with a bypass is a DS. I am looking at the VSG and that is my choice we'll see what the Dr says. Because of my higher weight(BMI) I would not be too disappointed if he said the DS. even a RNY is better than dying

I think that RNY sometimes gets a bad rap. Mine has been uneventful for the most part and I have lost 60 lbs. in the first eight weeks. The suppliments can be a pain, but it's hardly worth noticing in the grand skeem of things. Good luck!

Congratulations! Good to hear you have done well! jp and Bubba are fairly frequent posters here. And a few other VSG guys who slip my mind.   As for the “no need for any supplemental proteins.?” At 4+ years out and over 3 years at a Normal range BMI, I only needed supplemental Proteins early on. After my first 6 to 9 months I just eat food,  (not that whey protein isn’t” food”) Just, Normal Food. I think the perception of RNY’ers ‘Living on Shakes’ Comes from a message Board made up nearly completely of folks at 1 year or less Post-Op. You’ve done Great! Keep it Up! Best Wishes- Dx

That is great!! Keep up the fine work.  I also chose the sleeve because I didnt want the malasorbition issues. I dont have a regular PCP because wife is a travel nurse and we are all over the country. So I wouldnt be able to get regular check ups. All I can say is you have to be happy with the decision you make otherwise you will fail no matter what surgery you have had. You will still need to eat right and excersise no matter what!   PS No hunger is correct but head hunger is worse!!

Take care
God Bless
