Lap Band on 12/04/06 with
Hey guys, I see on several posts guys saying that they still consume carbonated drinks after surgery. The most recent was a post from Dx.  I had the lapband and I know the one thing the Dr. told me was that I would have to be ready to totally give up all carbonation after the surgery. I thought all you RNY'ers were supposed to give up carbonation too? I'd like to hear from some of you guys wheather or not you have any kind of carbonated drink after haveing surgery. I guess having one doesn't hurt, but do any of you guys have carbonation on a regular basis? Dan

I wasn't allowed to have any for about 5-6 months after surgery.  After that, the head nurse at my doctor's office said it would be fine.  I drink them regularly now.

Dan, I had no carbonation my first several (maybe 9) months. Then a little now and then since then. It does tend to make me a little ‘gassy’ So it has lost a lot of it’s appeal. I’ll have a beer every 3 weeks or so, And a diet coke maybe one a week, if that often. I used to go through a 6 pack or more of Diet coke EACH DAY. I don’t know how they keep the lights on back at Coca-Cola Without my business. My doc also says to avoid it for the first 6 months. And then, "limit it" to "occasional" after that. Without really trying, I’ve pretty much followed that description to the letter. I have some in my local support group Who drink a diet coke or such each day, And just as many who have NONE. All of them with the same set of recommendations From the same Bariatric Clinic. Go with your doc’s recommendation and how it makes you feel…. Best Wishes- Dx

I have pretty much given up diet cokes post-op.  I usually had them before in restaurants, but since I can't drink much during meals, they are a poor value. I have reincorporated a substance called "beer" into the diet.  Had several Saturday with no problems.  But this will at most be a weekly, more likely monthly, thing.

My staple used to be diet coke.  Now it is just too bubbly.  I have converted to sprite zero which has less carbonation and no caffine which was something I kicked for the surgery.  Mostly I just drink water, though.

My doctors office also said to stay away as much as possible.  An occasional diet coke would be OK but not on a regular basis.  I have not had any since 5/21.  Been thinking about a beer but I'll give that some more time.  Don't want to sabotage the good work that's been happening to date. I think it depends on the surgery you had and your surgeon..most lap banders I've met have been told no more soda...only about 1/2 the RNYers I've met have been told no soda.....and hardly any of the DSers I've met have been told no soda. I had the DS almost 19 months ago...and I drink soda on a regular basis.  I couldn't for the first year...too many bubbles...... usually I drink 1 diet soda a day....but for the most part I drink water.
