Remind me, please: Acetaminophen contra-indicated?
I lost my mind yesterday at the hospital, and plumb forgot about the pharmaceuticals on the no-no list. They gave me Vicodin for the post-op pain, which contains acetaminophen (Tylenol). Is that on the general contraindicated list?
I won't willingly admit to having popped a naproxen sodium or three since surgery, but any time I did, it was never more than 2 in a 24 hour period, and just one day at any time. Those never bothered me, and it's logical to assume the digestive problem is cumulative to a course of the drug.
I'm asking more out of curiosity than anything else. The throbbing in my finger is about 1 of 10 unless I do something really stupid, so I don't think I'll be taking them anyway.
Tylenol (any acetaminophen) is on the "OK" List.
NSAIDS (ibuprofen, advil, etc...) along with asprin,
is typically not reccomended for any extended use.
The ulcer risk for RNY's is the problem.
It's not a total "no-no," just CAN cause problems.
My Bariatric Guy allows me to take a fairly strong NSAID
As long as I take a Nexium with it.
Some docs allow naproxin IF taken with milk....
There are "horror Stories" and anecdotal accounts
Of folks getting ulcers, and the "ulcer risk"
Is there even for non-by-passed folk using NSAIDS.
It's just harder to "fix" if the guts have been edited
To where the intestine meets stomach portion.
For DS folk, who have "intestine to intestine" connections
Ulcers are not as big a deal.
That's it in a nutshell...
Best Wishes-
