OT: Damsel In distress! Help!!!
Hey. I have owned nothing but foreign cars. I have had 2 Nissan's and 2 Toyotas well and I did have a Ford for a while when it was my first car but NEVER again....lol....I love my Toyota. Loved my Nissan Xterra too. If you are looking for safe and reliable for a descent price maybe a Nissan or a Toyota Carolla. I have a Toyota Tacoma truck and love it. Granted its new but I had a friend who had one that was a 1992 and had NO MAJOR problems with it.
Always get a carfax report too!! It may cost ya like 19 bucks but it saves you in the end from getting a lemon
If you can afford it I'd put down the 2k and finance one. I work for a bank and the rates granted are not great but I do know Toyota does have some awesome rebates going. I got my car with a 5K rebate and used that as a down payment.
Maybe consider a Volvo too....Let me know if I can help in anyway....I love car shopping!!! I consider it the real life version of Deal or No Deal....hahaha
I'm also originally from NYC and just moved back to Phoenix - my former home of 11 years - my advice would be to avoid the dealers and stick with the Auto Trader when you start looking - you will be more likely to find something in your price range via a private sale - and when it comes to private sales - almost every body in the Valley lists in the Auto Trader. Oh, yeah and of course, make sure the A/C works!!! I also think there are some auto auctions around town. I know there used to be one on Arizona Avenue in Chandler and I think there is one down around 35th Avenue and Lower Buckeye by all the junkyards.
Oh as you know here! AC is half the priority. I have been using the sorry bus line *GEEZ*
Please friend me. I could use some help- Hey those tent auto seler (There is one at Metro Center now) - do you know anything about those?
I am not looking to go the credit route.. I have enough bills and my credit is shot from student loans and a dissolved marriage.
I will pick up an autotrader tomorrow.
Thanx!

I know the bus system around Phoenix is pathetic compared to other big citie like NY and LA, but maybe mass transit will get better when the light-rail opens in Dec. 2008...As far as the tent sales go, I'm not sure about the one going pn at Metrocenter, but they usually are just dealers who move their stock to another location and call it a "special event" ....You might also try craigslist.com
