The Menu is Getting More Diverse... but why am I not happy about it?

Okay.. haven't started a topic for awhile guys, and let me bring you up to speed. August 28 marked my 2 months anniversary RNY.  Here are the stats so far as I know them.  Keep in mind that the three weigh-ins were on three different scales, so I'm not sure of the validity of these numbers. I shunned the scale at first because I didn't want to get too impatient, but I think it might be time to go and get one for my home. I'm 5' 11" , and went into the surgery on June 28 at my highest weight of 284lbs.  ( I had actually gained 14lbs. since my first appointment with the surgeon. They weren't happy about it either, but I was considered a light-weight for this surgery which gave me a bit of grace. I had every co-morbidity known to man which justified and warranted this operation, and the insurance company didn't even blink when they approved it.  I have been off of all my meds since surgery, and my CPAP machine is collecting dust also since I don't need it anymore. I am sleeping soundly and dreaming like a ******* which tells me that I'm getting into deep REM sleep. 3 week check-up at surgeons office... 248lbs. At about 6 weeks out at my primary Dr.'s office...  234lbs. Last weigh-in was about 2 weeks ago, and I can definitely feel that the weight loss has slowed down.. at least it seems so. I still have about 50lbs. to go, and frankly I'm worried about ever reaching goal because I'm eating less than 1200-1500 calories just about every day and have been since surgery. (just an estimation) Yesterday I really craved one of my past favorite foods and wanted to try it again. I had a slice of pizza w/pepperoni, and it went down nicely and I liked it.  I was hoping for a negative reaction or at least a little discomfort, but nope!  My body sucked it up!   I realize that we can't live on protein bars and beans the rest of our lives, but has anyone else felt like they failed, or like they're not going to lose weight after they expanded their menu??  I realize that the one slice of pizza probably had no more than 400-500 calories, and my total intake for the day was probably within range, but you just feel like it's "taboo" . Am I setting the bar too high to think that you can't eat fun foods in moderation anymore?? Do you guys still eat things like this? ...........and to think that only a month ago I couldn't stand the thought of food and practically lived on protein shakes.. and probably around 500 calories a day. I know I couldn't continue like that anyway!

I didn't have the RNY, but I think everyone post op (regardless of the surgery) has some food demons to battle.  Lets face it, all of us were fat for a reason...it might be that we just liked too much of a good thing, or that we had emotional issues and self medicated with food rather then drugs....etc etc. After the inital surgery (RNY, DS, VSG) there is just so much restriction, eating 1 or 2 spoon fulls of food just make you feel stuffed.....but slowly things start to open up...it's normal to get a bit freaked. Personally, I got freaked at 3, 6,9months and 1 year out.  It just seemed like every 3 months I could eat more and more.   At 18 months out, I stopped freaking...I'm at goal, eating right for my surgery type, and have basically put my food demons behind me.  It might be something that you need to work on ..either by yourself, or with a therapist.  Because redeveloping a relationship with food sometimes takes a bit of work. On a side note,   I don't think 1 slice of pizza is the ruin of your post op diet., as long as you got in enough protein for the day, and it didn't make you throw up, and you are aware that if you eat 1 slice of pizza, you don't follow it up with 3 more, some cookies, and a few cokes. Hi Beast,

Don't worry, the "treats", "splurges" or "slipups" won't get you as long as overall, you're staying with the program. That said, while it's pretty hard to actually gain and substantial weight your first year or two, if you are exercising, it would be possible to stop *losing* weight three months out if your overall carb or calorie intake were too high.

Sounds like you're still doing fine.

Best Wishes,

Dave

Thank guys!  I kinda needed a little reassurance.  When you start to get hungry after a couple months you begin to think the honeymoon is over.
