I need a good protein shake
Hay all, Were can I fine a good protein shake, drink, powder, mix, whatever .They told me at the seminar to find one I like. well that was like three weeks ago and still nothing . I cant get around very good due to health. I am also on SSI so the funds arn't all that good either. So any ideas ? Good prices ? Help!
If you can tolerate whey protein...walmart sells 2 types of whey protein shakes (body fortress is one fo them, I can't remember the other) for about 12 dollars. It's less then 1 dollar a portion, which is VERY cheap in the world of protein shakes.
I cannot tollerate whey at all.....so I was using a soy protein shake....although I just found out that while I cannot eat fried eggs anymore...I can drink egg protein shakes. They are a bit more expensive then whey, but it doesn't have the same estrogen effect that soy has...and egg protein is very bioavailabe, it's either equal or better then whey if memory serves me correctly.
If you ahve a bit of time to wait, GNC always has sales...I mean almost every week. Buy one get one 1/2 off...or buy one get one free. You can sometimes get a really good deal..although their shakes cost a considerable amont more. You might want to try getting some samples from vitalady.com or bariatriceating.com Because the best protein shake will be the one you can 1) afford to buy and 2) the one you will be willing to drink.
My biggest advice is not to buy too much of any one product as a preop...tastes change after surgery..and it's hard to know what you will like post op.

Pre-op, I like ones I got from a place called yourbetterhealth dot com. They have both whey and egg based produced. I liked the egg protein the best.
Post-op, I found I prefer the Atkins canned shakes. Available at Wallyworld etc for about $1/can. The slim-fast LOW CARB shakes are not bad either, but a bit too rich for my taste buds.
Good luck.

Back when I used them, GNC was a pretty good source.
For a "Guide to all Protein Options"-
Checkout-
Ard'sList is pretty complete.
If you "doctor" them up, most are useable.
Walmart or a Sam's Club has good prices.
If you order any over the internet
There's shipping to figure in.
What I did like about GNC is they would accept returned (unopened) products
If after trying you think-
"I can't gak down this crap!"

Hey Chip,
Welcome. The stuff doesn't even have to be good, if you just mix it with a teacup full of water and gulp it down. Some people were using the Unjury (expensive) - tasteless stuff that you mix in with regular food. Same principle, except no mixing with food. What you will have to do is make sure you are getting enough water and that it is not too soon after the protein. I wait at least two hours.

I'm a big fan of the unflavored Unjury protein product. It's like $17 for twenty servings of 20g whey protein isolate each. What I really like is how it becomes any flavor you want when you add fruit, crystal light, SF torani syrup, etc to it. If you set up an auto shipment with them you save like %15. It's a good product.

Hey Chipster -
I'm in the same boat as Jake in that I am a die-hard Unjury fan.
It's a little more expensive but it goes down so easily for me. Also, in consideration that it's my primary source of protein supplementation, it's worth the extra cost.
Also, in agreement with Dx et al, if you doctor up your chosen protein mix, almost anything is tolerable.
Consider how much money you are NOT spending on Twinkies, Snickers, and Little Debbies and apply that to the cost of your protein powder and you'll feel better about it.
