are there no sugar protiens or shouldn't I be concerned with that with the low amounts of food I'll be eating. Also are there flavor-less protien mixes? What about Muscle Milk? What about buying shakes? Are there other mixes I need to beinformed about for Carbs, fruits and vege's? I'm thinking about getting one of those Magic Bullet blenders: http://www.themagicbulletfactory.com/ They sell them at Target and Walmart but if you buy here I think you get the 21 piece set.  Have to go and check out what they have at these stores. Tell me what you buy and where and what I need help learning about this stuff. Thanks. BTY - I'm waiting to hear back from 2 Dr's, 1 here in VA that take my insurance, and another at John's Hopkins.  I assume my insurance will pay for some at both places, I'm leaning towards John Hopkins though, I have some special needs and they specialize in ny needs.  So I hope to be meeting with the Dr's mid-Sept and scheduling my VSG. Thanks.

I'm new, but here's what I know. There is a virtually tasteless whey protein that you can add to stuff called "Any Whey". As for shakes, I use a Wal-Mart brand called "Body Fortress." It has 110cal, 2.5g fat, 3g carb (1 sugar), and 23g of protein. Mix this with milk and you have about 30g of protein. Best of all, it's super cheap. A 2lb tub is only $12. Buying shakes is ok, you just have to watch the sugar. I hear people do Muscle Milk too, but I heard that is kind of high in calories and sugar. I also have a magic bullet and use it for my shakes or to make protein smoothies with vanilla protein, yogurt, frozen fruit and V8 Fusion. Eric

I used the unflavored AnyWhey from GNC and put it in my morning yogurt.  I never got into any other protein drinks....got majority of my protein from my yogurt and the meats that I ate.  Now I get all my protein from my foods. I have tried the Isopure drinks from GNC that come in various flavors.  It's like watered down kool-aid, but high in protein.  Not too bad. Good luck in finding something you'll enjoy. Floyd

Ok where do you get your protien powders?  I get mine from wherever is cheapest.  Froogle is a good place to start, it usually directs me to Amazon or AllStarHealth. are there no sugar protiens or shouldn't I be concerned with that with the low amounts of food I'll be eating.
Most of these powders are artificially sweetened, the carbs are part of the whey.  A good powder should be mostly protein with very little fat/carbs. Some are zero carbs/fat. That's unnecessary, and you often pay pretty high at the margin for that. But if the protein content is too low relatively, it's a poor value, and all else equal, I'd rather save my daily carb/fat budget for my "real" foods.  I think it's a rare person who is going to have trouble with the amounts of carbs in most powders.
Also are there flavor-less protien mixes? Yes, Optimum Nutrition makes the only one I've tried  (Any Whey).  It's mostly flavorless, though more detectable in some foods than others.

What about Muscle Milk?
Haven't had it.
What about buying shakes? You mean the premixed ones in a box or can?  Some people like them, but you end up paying a lot more per gram of protein usually.  Also, a lot of them have extra carbs and fat added.  I'd prefer to buy a good generic vanilla powder (EAS or Syntrax) and add stuff occasionally for flavor.

I'm thinking about getting one of those Magic Bullet blenders:

People like them.  I just use an old standard blender or a shaker.  A standard mason jar fits most blender bottoms so that's a cheap way to make a home-brew "magic bullet" (got an old blender at the thirft store for $3, threw out the cracked pitcher).  A dozen mason jars means you can just blend, rinse the blade in the sink, and drink out of the jar. Here are some other protein thoughts: Compare powders per ounce (or per X grams, or whatever), not per serving. They manipulate the serving sizes to make them look better or worse in terms of nutrition or price (1 scoop = 25 grams in one product, 1 scoop = 40 grams in another). Per ounce, a good powder has 20+ grams of protein and less than 6 grams of carbs/fat. Many fit this bill. Converting the serving size into an ounce also makes it easier to figure out how much you are actually paying. Whey protein is generally best, if you don't have problems drinking it. "Whey protein isolate" is marginally better than "whey protein concentrate" or "whey peptides" in terms of the amino acid profile (how well the different types of protein structures match your body's probable needs) and bioavailability (how well your body can use the proteins). Some powders will be all one or the other, many are a mix. But all whey forms are great, much better than any other protein source per gram (including collagen or soy, other major sources of protein supplements), so it's a little silly how much some people quibble about whether they use isolate or concentrate, but then have no regard for whether the balance of their protein comes from eggs, beef, whatever (which vary much more in their quality). Pure isolate proteins have very little fat/carbs, slightly better amino acid profile, and cost much more. Finally, a good powder tastes good and mixes easily. Some products are so hard to dissolve they require a blender and/or ho****er, and others leave a gritty/chalky residue no matter how you mix them.  I rated a bunch of protein powders for mixability and flavor here.  Obviously, this is highly subjective.

Well you've done your homework.  Before even reading your msg I had found ON Any Whey which I am planning on getting as a first try, but I'm glad to see it's made your best product list.  I'm sure I'll be going back to your posts over and over to see what else you recomend. Thanks.

You might also want to try the New Whey liquid protein "shots".    I never was able to consistently use the powdered proteins but these taste good and have very low carbs.  I like that they are pre-measured and are easy to store and carry. They come in 25 MG protein or 42 MG protein.   I buy mine here: http://www.vigorousliving.com/idssports.html For the 42 MG Protein Calories 176  Calories from Fat 0  Total Fat 0g 0%  Saturated Fat 0g 0%  Cholesterol 0mg 0%  Sodium 64mg 3%  Potassium 61mg 1%  Total Carbohydrate 2g 1%  Dietary Fiber 0g 0%  Sugars 0g  Protein 42g 84% JP

Man you are doing a great job or getting preapred.  Way to go!! I got a whole bunch of Dr. Prescribe Carnation Instant Beakfeast SF before suregery then came back from surgery lactose intolerant,..so I used themnma s gift and the kids drink them as chocolate milk mix. I switched to ISOPURE 50 gms scoop.  Pretty tasteless,..mixed it with yogurt, SF pudding, put it in drinks (water, applejuice, lactose free milk).  NOt pleasant but it helped me get my protein requirements in during the liquid and soft food recovery phases.  But it is also a bit pricey.  The I discovered the Body Fortress Whey protein at WalMart.  I found they ingredients and contents were as good or better than most others and it si the report $12-13 a big 2 lb jar.  The whey mixes with less lumps than soy protein and the Whey is supposedly better for men.  I tried protein vials and drinks.  I used the lactose free Boost strawbewrry and choclate for a while but the more I drank them the nastier they started tasting. Mixing my own with a blender or shaker became and is still my favorites. I also, at phase III solid food reintro, started using protein bars.  Man was that an educating experience.  Most are a alot of calories or carbs for the protein they provide,...except for Pure Protein brand.. I am a addict of the Chocolate Deluxe bars .  The newer blueberry and strawberry bars are pretty decent too but i use them to keep my protein intake up in the 100gm range (4-6 bars a day) plus protein rich foods as primary intake with my 64+ ozs of water.  Read the nutrition info labels,..its amazing the differences. The important part is to find what works for you and your tastes and lifestyle and go with it. The guys out here put out a great wealth of info.  Its a great resoure to stay close too. Oh yeah, add Biotin to your post-op vitamin list too, helps you keep your hair.  Doctors didn't tell me about that but the OH posters did and it works too.

Personally I have yet to find a protein powder that tastes worth a crap.   It seems like I've pretty much bought or sampled them all and they all suck ballz.  I have never been able to 'enjoy' them but I realize that they are necessary since I want to get at least 200 grams a day.     Since day one when I took the Pro-Stat liquid protein (heh heh, your nutritionist should give you a bottle of this or something similar when you leave the hospital.  Saying it doesn't taste so good is an understatement)  until today, 18 months later, I shoot my protein like a shot.  :)   I bought a PowerChopper for work and I have a Magic Bullet at home.  Both are essentially the same thing but the PowerChopper is a cheaper knock off product.  I dump a couple scoops in around 4-6 ounces of water, blend it up and then choke the concoction down.   42 grams a shot three to four times a day plus some meat or something at night and I hit my daily protein goal.  Regarding some of the ones you mentioned above.   Muscle Milk - Unless they released a lower carb version I'd avoid that one because of the high sugar content.  Muscle Milk busted my cherry for dumping.  :) Soy Protein 95 - Avoid any protein with Soy in it if you can.    Studies have shown that soy protein can increase estrogen levels.   I'm trying to get rid of the moobs I have left, not make them bigger.   Hey, I read it on the Internet so it must be true!   Flavorless protein supplements - They will probably give you a can of this nasty powdered bile when you leave post-op.   They told me to mix it in with soups and such.   It was nasty and I hated the smell, consistancy and taste.  Non the positive side, GNC does sell a bannana flavor powder that has 21 grams of protein a scoop that I've found to be tolerable.   It still sucks but at least I don't gag like some of the other brands / flavors.  it also blends very well with the PowerChopper and Magic Bullet.   Some of the powders kidna clump up a bit in shaker cups or blenders and this one doesn't.    I give it a 3 outta 10.   (That's a high score for me since everything else gets a -6)  :)
