Hey Guys,

I'm not diabetic, but my father is. He says he's taking a medicine called Byetta and it looks/ sounds like the hormonal effects of appetite control are similar to those of RNY:

Not sure if this info is useful to anyone, but Dad says he's lost five lbs the first month.

Dave, I'm walking proof that it works. I was on Byetta for the first part of this year...until I had my WLS. I used it faithfully and ate exactly at the one hour mark following the dose. That  was the first time in my life where food did not call me by name. Now that I've had the RNY, I have the same sensation as being on Byetta. I talked my mom into going on it and she has not lost any weight. As I tell her, you do have to work with it. She takes her dose and then she eats within a half hour or so...it makes her too sick to wait the full hour. I would feel that way a bit, but once I started eating it would go away. Anyway, I lost 36 pounds using it from January to mid-May of this year...AND....as of today, I have lost a total of 100 pounds in less than 8 months. I'm only 3 months post-op, so I'm really glad that Byetta gave me the boost. I have a short story relating to Byetta. I went on Byetta and my wife and I decided to go out to dinner. We went to a steakhouse and I ordered my usual steak. When it came I started eating it and got about 2/3 through in and said to my wife that I was too full to finish the steak. I never had any trouble finishing that steak before??? Then I realized that the Byetta had done its job. It just never dawned on me that Byetta had helped me take some of my dinner home....that just never had happened before. I loved my Byetta while I was on it. John

Dave, I think Walter here (from the DS Board) was using it. In fact, it may have worked so well for him that his BMI Dropped below WLS approval range. (Just my memory, and could be all wrong, Hope he drops into the thread.) I have heard similar accounts from others. Hope it works out great for your Dad! Best Wishes- Dx

I feel the love that  u remembered me, its been a long time since ive posted,  yes it did work very well , so much as you said that I drop out of the wls criteria,  and due to Afib my activity level was depressed too, probly too much by self induced depression so I have regained enough ,just barely to qualify for surgery again, but the a fib is cured.

Guys, I don't know much about Byetta, but my mother was diagnosed with Diabetes earlier this year. Her doctor tried her on it and she doesn't each much at all these days. I am not sure how it works, but I think it does exactly what it is supposed to do and that is keep you from eating everything in site. Tommy

Most diabetic med cause weight gain, byetta apart from causing appetite loss, and some nausea has a more important effect of leveling out the glucose level or insulin level in the blood, so you don't have the highs and lows of the cycles of hunger, thus your diabetes are much better controlled, and weight loss is a added benefit. My a1c is 5.25 which is a normal non diabetic level. since byetta

Interesting mails, fellows. Looks like the docs are finally making some inroads to hunger control.

You'd think with the inroads they are making with hunger control..and the inroads they are making with malabsorbtion in pill form (alli)..that eventually there will be very little need for WLS.   Scott

orilstate, ali, or exenical really does work, been on it for several years, it gives you the intestinal track of a DS, reduces fat absorption, and u see it in the toilet if you  consume fat. my edocrinologist indicated that they have drugs in europe that really do curb appetite but are not fda approved.  he provided me with the name, but offshore pharmacys are too risky, and as elusive as wls is im still persueing it.
