6 month diet question

I saw my pcp this morning and talked with him about wls.  I told him that I wanted to have the surgery and that i needed his help with documenting the 6 month diet.  He said no problem and then said that my insurance would probable not cover diet related visits.  Did any of you guys have this issue?  How did you handle it?  Pay out of pocket or have him check something else while you were there so that he could bill the visit as something other that diet related. I have finished everything except the diet.  Saw the nut yesterday and had the other pre-cert test last week.  Everything is looking great except for the diet thing. Can you tell I am a little discouraged?  Hoping this will all turn out well. Randy

Check and see if the insurance will take Weigh****chers....I think it's $12 a week....and then you could have the doc check every other month or so too... Russ

Randy, My doctor's practice had a Theraputic Lifestyle Change Center supervised by a nurse practitioner, an exercise physiologist, and physical therapists.  They checked my weight and excercise routine and reported it to the doctor.  So I only had to visit the office every 3 months. I actually had high blood pressure at the time, and the visits were listed as hypertension treatment.  So they were covered. Good luck with the diet.  The 6 months will go fast.

My insurance doesn't cover WLS (yea - don't get me started on that one!!!!!!!!!!!!) - but, i would think that if you have co-morbidities (hypertension, gastric reflux, sleep apnea, arthritis, diabetes, etc), your doctor should be able to bill your insurance for one of those conditions..... Best of luck with everything - you'll figure out a way to get it done, and you'll be on the losing side before you know it....  Don't get discouraged by this - keep pressing forward - it's well worth it.......... My ins. required the six month doctor supervised diet. They covered all of the visits. He had to have records of each visit where we had discussed the different issues of my diet and changes I needed to make and had made. He also worked in how changing my diet would effect my health. My ins is a PPO plan and since he is my PCP and in network I had no problems with the bills. All I had to pay was the co-pay. pan head

Yeah.  Just treat them as monthly doctor's visits.  I only paid the co-pay.  I didn't tell the insurance company anything.
