Fiber/ Water & Nutrient Absorption? Mal?
Hey Guys,
While we're on a nutritional roll getting lots of good info from Dx, Russ and the boys...just thought I'd ask about something that has been brought up peripherally:
I talked to a nut in the US who was worried about the water content in protein shakes and thought that I should use only a bare minimum of water. Any thoughts on that? Does water actually wash protein away in RNY post-op? I'm sure that less water would not hurt, as long as the person got in the required water AWAY from food and protein time.
And on a similar note:
How about fiber? On occasion, I've been adding syrup of very sweet whey protein to oatmeal. It's watery, so I'm getting both the liquid and some of the whey that's absorbed into the oats in one swoop.
So, anyone know which is better for absorption?
A little more fiber or more liquid?
My intuition would tell me that a modest amount of fiber would aid absorption and the more water I have, with protein or anything, the *less* absorption I would get. But here, I'm assuming speed through the intestinal track equals less absorption...
Am I missing the boat here on either the water or the fiber issue? For the time being, the slightly watery oats gives me the best of both worlds (or maybe the best of both "worsts"?).

Dave,
No, Michelle & Don with "Vitalady" are "the real deal."
Not so much a MLM scheme,
But just some folks who spent enough time and energy
Into researching and posting
that they figured they might as well make a little $
Off of their efforts, just to cover their ‘Time Spent.’
Several WLS Product/Protein Provider sites
Started as just super committed WLS Board types
Who parlayed their efforts into a profitable venture.
Susan Maria, Kaye Bailey, Craig Thompson, even
David Becker (Dave@Goal) set up a site with an on-line store attached.
As for the Fiber/water absorption formula?
It would take a good bit more info to get even a good
Approximation and it would vary per individual.
You’d need to measure all intake (divided into varying elements)
And measure your "output" by catching and measuring
All bodily excretions in order to take a stab at it.
Even then, a lab would need to "burn some poop samples"
To calculate ‘Un-absorbed’ calorie content, and probably
Some "Flame Spectral Composition Analysis" in order to pin point
What really all "in there."
If you are "planning intake" to increase "Loose stool effect"
I’m not totally sure that will effect the protein absorption
As much as it would serve to mildly dehydrate.
Those "Pageant Gals" who take serious Laxatives for a few weeks
In order to crash weight loss for a -"Miss __Whatever__Pageant"
Tend to have only water weight loss.
One can get in "Too Much Water,"
But it’s pretty rare….
Sometimes with runners who are sweating fast
and running the water quickly through their metabolism.
The "washing out of electrolytes" seems to be the problem…
Check out-
Hyponatremia
I think as long as it’s not leaving the intestines
and getting through the whole metabolic cycle, the chances of Water
Being a problem or even factor in "flowing through intestines"
Is all dependent on one’s individual "Toilet-ing Actions."
(how’s that for a gentle way to say ****)
Best Wishes-

Thanks, Dx.
Was wondering what nuts say about non-ops - their fiber and water intake and how it affects nutrient absorption?
(Also, interesting cultural point, but no necessarily part of the question:)
There have also been some urban legends/ Asian medical theory stating that too much water diluting digestive enzymes, rendering them less effective (ineffective?). One Japanese doctor of traditional Chinese medicine also told me, more than 200cc and hour could cause physical weakness. If this were true, WLS people would be even more succeptible.
Thanks Again,
Dave
Hi CB,
Maybe I just don't have a clear picture in my mind of how the small intestine works. I'm probably oversimplifying with "half the length of pipe and same volume = twice the speed going through." In reality, the small bowel is probably hanging on to all that stuff for dear life.
I haven't been drinkng the grape juice lately, but I went through a period when summer was coming on where I would drink two quarts a day and a quart of skim milk and not gain a pound. Wasn't seeing any diarrhea either. This is when I really started to think about "same water, shorter pipe" problem.
Still wondering what nuts say about fiber and water for non-ops? Wonder what the effect of fiber and water are on nutritional absorption for non-ops?
