Just curious if i ever take it if there's something that you would answer that would hinder u from surgery?

For me, it was just a brief discussion with a psych....it didn't feel like a test.

They want to make sure you are mentally capable of sticking to the weight loss plan, and that  you have plenty of support available for you after surgery.   I had depression and anxiety, and the Psychologist recommended this surgery as a way to overcome some of this.   If you answer honestly, it shouldn't be a problem.  If you are a drug addict, or some addict, with no support system, then they might turn you down.   Hopefully that isn't the case!   Take Care, Brad

I did my psyc yesterday and I was so nervous about it...  I didn't sleep the night before, and had the worst dry mouth when I was in there.  At the end of my psyc I was told that I will be approved to move forward with no action needed.  Now, I was just myself and told the truth.  But hey, I dont think I am crazy either.  I would just expect a NO if  you answer yes to "Do you ever see or  hear things that other people cant?" Be honest about you food issues...  If you lie your only hurting yourself in the long run!

Joe, This is what I got some years back From a friend on "my other Board" (although she is a featured convention speaker for Obesity Help) I’ve passed it on many times….. Dr. Marcy Rosenzweig Leavitt OH Profile for Dr.Marcy

Dr. Marcy Rosenzweig Leavitt (in the News): People Magazine Inside Edition Good Morning America/ABC News "As a psychologist who does psych evals for wls patients (among others) I can tell you what I look for. I usually want to make sure the patient has a clear understanding of the surgery and what accommodations/changes they will need to make after surgery is over. Do they have unrealistic expectations for their recovery, weight loss, life after surgery? I also want to see about their support system: do they have one? If are they engaged in support systems, groups, perhaps, even weekly therapy sessions. Most important: Is the patient suffering from any severe mental illnesses that may prevent them from having a normal healthy recovery. Will the illness escalate? Are they stable? Are there any other addictions that they are covering up (drug/alcohol use). Will any of these complicate surgery and/or endanger the patient’s life. If they are stable and have a condition such as Bi-Polar Disorder many times they are ok'd. Mostly, I just speak to the patients. I may give the MMPI II (the 500 questions exam) but usually I give the Beck Depression Scale Questionnaire. I speak to them and I let them tell me their story. I hope that helps. Marcy"

Hope this helps, Best Wishes- Dx

Hey Joe..... Now of the guys BOB M is the only one that I know that got kicked to the curb several time by the shrink...but anyway, he is having surgery today.....(that was good...he would just go in and pick a fight with them off the bat....I think.....) But some of the chicks bet rejected....the go in and start crying, talking about blah blah blah.....and you see that they have other issues that cause them to be large.... besides that...I think it just ...do you know what the hell you are doing, getting this operation....? it's not that hard....I slipped past them Russ

Hi Joe, My advice is to find a psychologist who is recommended in your area by other WLS people, then, you when go in and see her/him be honest and sincere about your knowledge of WLS.   DON'T VOLUNTEER SELF DIAGNOSED IMAGINED CONDITIONS such as I volunteered that I have always thought of myself as Passive/Aggressive.  That made her perk up and redirect her questioning - turns out that my definition of this is not the psych's definition....so.   The most important thing is to go to a quack that someone else recommends, just because they say they've 'worked in this field' doesn't mean they're good at it.  I went through 2 quacks before I went to a psych. recommended by CF and talking with her was great.  The other two didn't even touch on WLS, they wanted to break down my life from the very beginning and wanted AT LEAST 1 YEAR IN THERAPY before recommending me for WLS. You'll know in the first 10 minutes if they are WLS experienced because they should be talking about the surgery!  Nuff said.  Good luck.  BobM.

My psych review was a long 100+ question set of tests, with a 15 minute discussion two days later after they did the grading. Our Psych seemed to be obsessed with finding OCD within his WLS patients. He did not see any OCD in me, but he said many of the ladies he has tested did. He approved the OCD people for WLS, he just added more meds to their program. Overall the process was a piece of cake, of course my Plan B was to strip naked in his office and try to push his scotch tape dispenser and stapler up my butt while screaming, “I am fat as hell , and I am not going to take it anymore!”, until he signed the papers.  Though the need for using that plan never came up…     Whatever works.

Paranoia over psychiatric evaluations will bar you from surgery.

JUST KIDDING! I got through it just fine, even though they picked up on my innate contempt for authority. They're looking to see if you have unrealistic expectations, or that you're deluding yourself for some reason. It's not a big deal provided you get a pshrink who is neutral or pro WLS. Bob M. got hooked into a string of unethical pshrinks who wanted to couch him for the $$$ instead of letting him have his surgery.
