Hi All,  Been a while since I have been on the board but tomorrow I go in for my 1 year check up!  Down about 160 lbs.  Strange thing is...the past month or so I have developed some really weird symptoms.  Slurred speech, a bit of memory trouble and some overall balance issues.  I am down to less pain meds than I have been on in 5 years so I cant imagine that would be the issue...seems to be getting worse though...family is noticing big time and giving me a really hard time about it. (Doesn’t quite seem fair).  Does this "ring a bell" with anyone on the board???  Man that would sure help! Thanks, Mike Hiott

You've been on pain meds for 15 years? I would venture to guess that the meds are causing these problems, not WLS. When my mom was terminally ill the docs placed her on pain meds, within a year and a half she started developing similar symtoms to yours. I don't remember the name of the meds, they were pretty strong though.  Sounds like you, and your doctor, need to take a strong look at what meds your taking.  I'd be interested in what you find out. Let us all know. Ron

Could you have had a mini stroke?  Get it checked out man!!

Might want to make sure your B-1 levels are correct (accounts for speech and memory problems).  there is a lot of current research out there about B-1 deficiency in longer term WLS patients.  Also  make sure that you didn't have a mini-stroke.    Nothing to fool around with.  Good luck Rob

Don't let up until you get a reasonable answer.  I would go to a specialist...maybe neurologist.  In this day and age you MUST be persistant in your medical advocacy...nobody else will be because they are just too busy.  If you don't pu**** it may be too late by the time the cause becomes obvious.  Take care of yourself, buddy. My first thought would be contact your doctor ASAP and have blood work done.  It could be almost anything..from mini stroke to  a vitamin deficiency.  Lots of people (RNYers and DSers) develop B deficiencies post op.  When your B vitamin levels are low, it does cause memory issues...and may even cause brain damage if it's left untreated.   I hope you take this seriously and have it checked out right away. Get yourself to a neurologist yesterday, dude. I can think of several causes, and none are good.

If u went to the ER and they did a CT and blood work I wonder if it is a B1 issue as somoene else said. Check out the link I found on it. http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec12/ch154/ch154f.html
