After surgery - what percent of Real Sugar can we have?

I was told to seriously avoid sugars.  This morning my wife gave me a package of oatmeal w/ apple.  The sugar content was 5 grams.   I only got maybe two bites and felt like I was going to dump.  I didn't but it was very close...   I can't remember but I do think I did chew... and the two bites  took about 10 minutes.  Not sure if I heard we can process a tiny bit of sugar.   Any words on sugar content?  Also, is "Isopure" a good brand for "Protein Powder"?  I've been going to a "smoothie King/factory" for protein shakes, No Carb, high protein. It totally depends on the person.  For me, it also depends on whether it's morning or night, what I've eaten that day, how much liquid I've drank, and also just random component.  I sometimes have a mint or two (pure sugar) after lunch with no problem.  Several times went to a movie with a girl (who always gets starbursts) and had two of them with no problem.  Had three once and curled up in my seat with sickness. Also depends on the type of carbs and how much fiber and others stuff is mixed in.  I can eat about as much stawberries, grapes, peaches, apples, as I want with no reaction at all.  Yet 1.5 oz of Doritos (not sugar, but very simple carbs, obviously) made me nap for two hours.  And some sweet BBQ sauce on ribs also made me sick once. I personally try to stay under 10 grams of sugar at a sitting, and I avoid sugar and most other carbs almost completely before noon.

Thanks.  I try to watch what I am doing...   I'll wait a couple of days and try the oatmeal w/apple again.  Maybe I ate to fast or didn't chew.   But something was different...  thanks again for the information. Mike

Mike, I’m late joining the chorus of- "Different for everyone!" I’m an "Easy-Dumper." Anything over 4 gms of sugar and I’m risking a case of explosive diarrhea, And some shaky-sweats. Over 6 gms and (for me) it’s almost a guarantee. I just got really good at reading labels early on And only have an "Ooops" about every 4 to 5 months. For protein powder/supplement? The Best? Is the one you’ll use. I didn’t like anything sweet-tasting early on Or since really. So I used un-flavored Protein powders And added them to yogurt, soup, oatmeal and such. Best Wishes- Dx

Like Ardbeg said everyone is different. My nutritionist advised us to avoid having any more than 5 grams of sugar at once. In reality though, it takes some trial and error to find your own personal "sweet spot" - that magic number of grams of sugar that if you stay below you feel fine and if you exceed you are curled up in the fetal position on the floor or on the couch for the next hour. For me it is about 8 grams, but everyone is different, and in general I don't even like to mess around so I never knowingly eat more then 5 grams of sugar at once. Here is another, often overlooked component of dumping that if you don't already know about, you need to, That is sugar alchohols, avoid them like the plague. They will F you up just as bad as sugar. TONS of products are labeled low sugar or low carb and are actually sweetened with these Evil-Doers. When sugar alchohols are present they are listed on the nutritional info under the subheading of sugars - again no more then 5g of total sugar (including alchohols) should keep you safely out of dumpland. A good rule of thumb about sugar alchohols - if you see the words "Net Carbs" used to extoll the low carb virtues of a product on it's box, check the nutr. info, cuz sugar alchohols aren't included in net carbs, but your dumping mechanism has a different set of rules. A lot of protein bars and "low-carb" ice creams fall into this category. Also you can spot them on the ingredients list - anything ending in -ol such as sorbitol, malitol, etc...That's it for now - here's to not dumping!

Since I have never dumped, as in yakking, as my surgeon puts it. I can't really tell you much about it. I will say that I have dumped out the other end. I have eaten something that would give me the ****s like you wouldn't believe about an hour or two after I have eaten. I watch the sugar content very closely and try to keep it down. I have never had a problem with sugar alcohol either. But again I tend to watch that as well. To be honest ketchup is probably the thing that I have eaten that has a lot of sugar and it didn't bother me. I will put it on top of a sirlon burger and with onions.  I use the Isopure protein mix and I like it quite well. I use the chocolate and the vanilla. Some times the vanilla seems to clump a litte but if you stir and then give it a couple of minutes and stir some more, it will mix up quite well. I try to drink one at work every day. I just keep a glass a spoon to mix with it. No shaker or any thing. I buy it at GNC and with the Gold Club card you get 20% off the first ten days of the month I think it is. They will also send you coupons through email and get an additional $5.00 off every now and then.  pan head

Brother MIke.... I'm confused.....when you say you came close to dumping.....what do you mean,,,,,came close to vomiting, or coughing something up???? If that is the case, I think the oatmeal was too thick....and it clogs your hole and everything backs up//// dumping gennerally takes about 15 mins, and you feel like you got the flu.... Which did you have//// Russ

My surgeon / nut. instructed me to keep both 5gr. per serving or less. Ah, dumping..... Fun stuff. NOT! Too much sugar and I go into carb coma. Too much sugar alcohols (Breyers No-Sugar Added Ice Cream) and oh, MY the gas / diarrhea. About 2 hours after I eat something with too many sugar alcohols the gas starts. And i'm talkin SERIOUS gas. 3 hours after that ( total of 5 hours post-stupidity ) It's bathroom city for the real fireworks.

ISOPURE is good.  It got me thru the first 3 months. Mixed as a drink or in with soft foods; yogurt, SF pudding, broth, etc. 5 grams of sugar aren't usually enough to cause dumping but as early as you are, things are whacky.  I couldn't eat bananas at your point and now I can with no problem. go figure. i think Russ is probably right about the consistency or something else perhaps, but your body didn't like something and you responded well and thats the right idea irregardless of the cause.  So,...you done good. Keep relearning and moving forward.  You sound like you are doing a great job there.
