No Longer Obese FART

Hey guys, I guess I can officially say I am no longer Obese.  I'm actually several pounds under now.  This one I guess is a real big deal for me.  Going under 300 was big, then 250...all big.  But this one is the big one because I really detest the term.  I guess being a white male I never really had to deal with traditional discrimination...the Title IX type of stuff.  But I really detested the term obese and Morbidly Obese.  It's a label that someone else puts on you, regardless of whether they know you or now simply because of something physical about you.   It also means I've dropped into another category for insurance reasons which is a big deal as well.  Not sure I will ever get to "normal" range - not sure I want to quite frankly as that would be another 30lbs to lose, but safely in the overweight camp is good enough...as long as it is not the dreaded obese word.

Do you guys feel the same way about that word? I've never seen an actual discussion here about it. Blessings, Greg

Greg -  I myself hate the word obese. Even more, morbid obese.  Morbid obese makes me feal like a freak!  I am still considered a 'freak', but one day I will be 'normal'. Great milestone you overcame, keep it up.

Greg, AWESOME!!!!  Totally with you on being SOOOO glad I've passed into the "overweight" zone of the BMI.  This weekend my DW and I have been looking through pre-surgery pictures, and were amazed by how far we've come.  This week we're going to bump up our exercise routine and re-focus on making sure we're getting in all of our vitamins! --Dave

Absolutely hate that word.  I guess it's because it's not just slang like fat, chubby, hefty whatever.  Getting tagged with Obese makes it feel cold yet official. The first time I heard that was I was in Junior High School and one of the students asked my why I was so Obese.  I have hated that word ever since. I'm looking forward to not being in this category any longer. Congrats! on your success Scott

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!

Greg That is awesome - congrats!!!!!!!!!!! I am right there with you.  About 3 weeks ago I dropped below the magical BMI of 29.9.  I am so happy to be rid of that label.  I too ave hated being labeled as a freak.  A couple weeks ago when I went to my PCP for a sinus infection she still wrote on my chart mild obesity and that pissed me off although at the time it was true.  She can't right it anymore.   All the best. The first time I was ever label obese was when I was in the Navy, It floored me. I knew I was a fat ....but obese.  My first discrimination....When my hitch was coming to a end I wanted to re-up for the USS Tennessee but my XO said that I was too fat to get the first time re-sign up bonus $$$ but not too fat to  stay in. I got pissed off and told him I would just take my fat happy azz back to the great state of Tennessee and got out. Who wants a skinny "Submarine" Cook.

Congrats on the milestsone.  It's a big goal of mine as well, one I hope to see by year's end. Yeah, some words sound just as awful as they are, and obese is one of them.  In fact, I've heard people refer to me as "overweight,"  which I guess in sync with our PC culture"vertically challenged," etc. But of course I knew that overweight has a medical definition, and I was usually past overweight (and of course, the times in my life I've been merely overweight, no one has referred to me as such).  I've always described myself as "fat."  It's concise and to the point.  But the word makes fat women in a 2 mile radius cringe.

Congrats Greg, I am with you on the Obese thing. I am simply owerweight now as well. When I started WLS I never even thought about becoming a "normal" BMI, but with beng within 8 lbs. of my orginal goal, I now think that "normal" maybe a possiblity.  pan head
