I went to my all-day nut. class yesterday, but forgot to ask this question: It seems like the post-surgery diet is pretty-much fiber-free for at least the first 2-3 months.  Now I realize that nutiritional needs change post-surgery, but EVERYBODY needs fiber to keep things moving correctly.  Don't they?

That's why God made Metamucil. For the first couple of months, you need the protein more than the fiber. That said, you'll be eating a lot less of everything, so a little fiber will go a long way. If you try eating something bulky, like say spinach, you could well yakk it up because there's no room for it. That said, I never was bound up the first year. Your Mileage May Vary.

You won't miss the fiber.  Think of ithe immediate post-op diet as a radiator flush. Liquids and soft food will clean out the old tubes and get thing moving just fine.  But don't let me spoil your upcoming and pending fun.  Just close your eyes,...follow the program,... and enjoy the ride.

Avoid fiber at first.  I tried it a couple weeks out and it was painful when it started to solidify in my pouch/upper intestine.  If you do it, do a divided dose several times (less than a tsp). My doctor had me on colace, a chemical laxitive, at first.  It's not great, but it's better than nothing.   I quit taking it as soon as I was able. Now, I do fiber most days, 9 grams net fiber per serving, with no problem.

Box, Very early on the- "Liquid in, liquid out" Thing seems to apply for most. "Soft Loose stools" seem to be common. BUT- many a person complaining about constant "Runs" one day, have locked up And found themselves "passing a brick" the next. You can tell a new WLS post-op by the fact that they may have something for diarrhea and constipation In the same shopping cart. Re-fried beans and oatmeal are good sources on the Pureed or mushy stage diets, same with applesauce. And many use some additive like "Benefiber" Once they pass on to more solid foods, But not yet on full crispy salads and such. Get what fiber you can, when you can. It does prevent constipation issues. Read your labels… Best Wishes- Dx
