OT- Just call me Perry Mason Columbo
Saturday morning I heard some noise outside the house on the street, was going to give my neighbor a hard time, we joke like that. Turns out it was a two man crime spree committing another crime. They stole about 1000 feet of copper wiring from the local school a few hours earlier and "staged" it at the playground behind our house. When they came back to get the loot they made just a bit too much noise. I got a full description and plates of the truck. they were arrested last night. The Sheriffs called me at 11:30 PM and asked if they could come by to make an ID, I said HELL NO I AM ASLEEP. They just left, I ids both guys and car. turns out they have been hiting ever city within 15 miles of here. YAY ME
Way to go. That has been a real problem around here as well. Last week there was a lady that woke up and her water would not work. She called the water co and they found that some one had crawled under her house and stolen her copper pipes while she slept.
There has been four or five guys electrocuted in the last two or three years trying to steal copper wire from substations or live power poles.
A teenage kid is in the hospital right now from an explosion from where he and an older man were in an abandoned coal mine and were using a torch to cut up scrap and hit a pocket of methane.
I could go on but you get my drift.

The coax on a tower goes for about $1/foot at the scrap yard, but the real money is in all the grounding equipment at a site.
The carriers have been working with the scrap yards to require and copy photo ID from anyone turning in large diameter coax. It has helped really cut down on theft in Houston.
After Katrina, we had a bunch of generators stolen off sites, too.
