Don't enjoy eating any more...

I was reading the questions about moving to solid foods, and tripple summed up my feeling best I think.  And even more so, I didn't really think about it or recognize it either... I just don't enjoy eating any more.  It is something I **HAVE** to do, not want to do.  If I don't eat, I get sick.  If I do eat, well, depends on what and how fast I eat.  But I can honestly say, I don't get the comfort or the pleasure from eating that I did before surgery.... WHICH IS WHY I USED TO EAT SO BLASTED MUCH!   Maybe a side effect from the surgery.  Maybe not.  But whatever it is, it is helping me, but it is also depressing me too.  *sigh*  I feel like an emotional wreck lately, but I am 6 1/2 weeks out from major surgery with a whole new life.  Alas, I am going to hold on, but ... man  what a FART moment this morning.

You have had a major Post op revelation FART,..and real WLS  milestone. I also came to not enjoy eating but that is a good result and conclusion to come too.  It helps us redirect our interests to non-food topics and goals throughout the day, like exercise and spending time with people rather than lets go eat or I can't wait to have____for lunch or dinner.  It is definitely an opportunity to take advantage of a new lifestyle thats different but long term good. I hated it at first and was quite frustrated but came to realize it was a major benefit of the new tool and I could accept that as good or fight it amd mess it all up and go back to my old obese habits. Duh!!  Glad the light bulb came on for me. It will for you too if it hasn't already. So,..what are you doing with all of your newly acquired free time you use to spend munching?? Man this is a good WLS day.  You are the second person to come to this WONDERFUL realization and it is a mental barrier that has to be dealt with and BUSTED through. Good busting dude! joe

Think positively. you're eating to live not living to eat!! Good luck and remember. Take your time with the food transitions. Not every day wil go the same. Some days you can eat anything, other days you eat 3 bites and it comes back up and you can't eat anything for 8 hours.

It's a phase I think a lot of us go through in that second to third month. I got over it and have gotten back to enjoying what I eat a little more. Just happy now to make the right choices 95% of the time.

At about a year out you'll start to regain some of that joy but you still have the small stomach size to help rain in your new hunger of old things. I still eat pizza but now it's two normal slices of thin crust and I am done, instead of eating most of a pie. I have completely lost my desire for some food that I use to love. I no longer enjoy pork chops as I did for 48+ years; they just taste bland in my mouth. I also have a defined full point now. I never, ever really felt full pre-WLS. I would eat till I hurt back in the day. Now it's as if a switch goes off and food that two bites before tasted great just become blasé and I know I am done. It really works I have lost 238lbs in 15 months. The most interesting change for me has been my reaction to alcohol. At 460lbs I could easily put away 7 to 8 shots of tequila in an hour with just a slight buzz. Now and ounce of scotch or tequila and I feel buzzed and two ounces and I am off to la la land.... and I fall asleep. I really have become a cheap drunk!!

Hi Brian,

I remember feeling that way early on. It's still to be expected. You're eating experience will be different five months down the line. Just realize that this is most likely temporary.

Don't be afraid to get some medication to help you through the emotional part of it.

Best Wishes,

Dave

Yep, sounds like you are ‘right on schedule.’ Take full advantage of this time. Yes, "You Have To." But, you get to chose what you add back to your list of foods. Go healthy! High Protein, High Fiber, High Vitamin and Anti-Oxidant content, etc… Start reinforcing Good eating choices and preferences NOW. When you get past year 2, when food is tasty again, You’ll be glad you’ve found some new "Favorites" That will serve you well for a long life.

That- "Emotional Wreck" business is what Life Without the numbing effect of over-eating, feels like. Use that excess energy to be-Super-Human! Once in a Life Time chance to have a Chance at the Time-Of-Your-Life!

Best Wishes- Dx

If your doctor didn't mention to you, the part of the stomach that was bypassed was the part that provided the hunger pains.  The part that was bypassed use to release grehlin.  When you are dieting grehlin (sp) will tell your head you are going into starvation mode.  It will cause your body to fight like the dickens to get back to it's original weight.  This is one of the blessings of RNY.  You do not feel hungry.  You really eat to live.  And frankly I do not miss KFC or Pepsi or half the things that were bad for me and causing a slow death.   I know it is a shock, yet in a month or two you will be eating more normal things and enjoying your weight loss to boot.  Let us know how we can support you.  We are all in this togeather...Brian
