I think there's something seriously wrong with my tastes in food.  I love all fish and seafood, most especially sashimi, sometimes caviar.  I love tofu also.  Enough of that. I was looking around for a meat substitute and found a little ditty call TVP or Textured Vegetable Protein.  I'm sure a lot of you have used this, what I was wondering...if I could use this on my liquid diet coming up and beyond, can it be a stand alone soup base or do I have to add bullion to it.  I'm not sure what it is......anybody?

I googled it because I hadn't heard of it.  Wikipedia had some information on it but it doesn't sound like a product that you'd use during the liquid phase of the post WLS diet.  Might be good for a protein source in the long term though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Textured_vegetable_protein

Bob, It's "de-fatted" Soy Protein. I’ve used it for the last 4 years. I use the Bob’sRedMill Textured Vegetable Protein and it’s great. Super easy on the pouch and it mixes with anything and takes on the flavor of whatever you put it in. Textured vegetable protein, 1 oz. (30g) Calories: 80 Protein: 15g Carbohydrate: 9g Total Fat: 0.3g Fiber: 6.0g *a good source of Iron (10mg) It’s sort of like "grape-nutz" The turns into a grainy-"Hamburger Meat-Like" texture when it absorbs the liquids in preparation. I add it to many foods- Soup, meat-loaf, chili, spaghetti sauce, etc… Any place I’d have hamburger meat. It add more protein without adding many calories and no animal fat. I’m not able to have much regular Soy because I’m on Coumadin for a previous Heart valve replacement, But because Textured vegetable protein Is not as good a source for isoflavones (phytoestrogens) As are most soy products, it does not have the typical interaction Problems with my "blood thinner.". Isoflavones are compounds thought be largely responsible For many of the health benefits associated with eating soy. Therefore, eating textured vegetable protein is unlikely To contribute substantially to the potential health benefits Derived from eating other soy foods, such as miso and tofu, just the protein benefits. Best Wishes- Dx
