Weight lifting and weight gain?

In the beginning of July I started doing lap swimming and doing water aerobics 3 times a week, and going to the gym 3 times a week. With the help of Cards Fan (Thanks you for all your help) he got me started on the nautilus equipment. I am using about 14 different stations, 3 sets of 12-15 reps and lighter weights. The first 3 weeks I averaged about 5-7 pound weight loss per week. But on Monday I got on the scale and my weight jumped up almost 10 pounds. Is this normal and at what point will I start losing weight again. Am I doing something wrong or do I need to change something in my diet? I am only 6 pounds away from hitting the 200 pounds off mark, and 100 pounds away from my goal weight, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure, but sounds too big a fluctuation to be real body mass of any kind. Maybe some of the previous losses were water. Have you started taking creatine or any other similar supplements? These can cause said weight gain. Or maybe increased your carb or perhaps salt intake? Carbs have to store in water, which is heavy.

Maybe do a couple of intermediate weighs during the week?

Best Wishes,

Dave

Thanks for the advice , I am already back down 5 pounds. I am going to increase my protein, and see how that works, and I will try some intermediate sets as well. Again thanks for your help. Alan

with dave on this one. if you're taking creatine then expect up to 7 pounds of weight gain. also, if you take a lot of protein that can kick it up a notch. however, you're doing a great routine to keep weight OFF. so i say give you bod a chance to settle into the routine and weigh yourself in the morning first thing after a dump too. try to keep this as the baseline for weighing in. you can go 5 pounds with jus****er retention. with your routine i would expect to lose a couple pounds a week. now be honost too. are you eating the right food and the right calories? if you are eating just protein and this workout you should be losing. so give it a little time and see if this works because it should, big time. i started swimming again and the pounds just fly off. it's really hard for me to keep mass when i swim. good luck.....carbonblob

nope, as a matter of fact i would up your protein intake to a gram per pound of body weight. i would also not take creatine for another 3 months. you want to see how you progress in the beginners phase, then you take that stuff and you'll see and feel a difference. as mentioned you'll gain weight with creatine too so don't take that now. maybe throw in some glucosimine for your joints. i don't see anything on your list that would cause a weight gain. i agree with the others, it's water and maybe you need a good dump too. don't laugh, it really effects your weight. are you taking enough bran to pass things along? i take benefiber in my protein shake just to be sure. so i say wait it out. see if you still have a gain next week. if so, go back over your diet. better yet, start a log right now and see if something is getting by you. you can't cheat a log. keep up with your routine. platueas are bound to happen and they do so don't give up.....carbonblob

Thanks for the advice , I am already back down 5 pounds after a good dump. I added glucosimine to my list, and will up my protein, but I am 355 pounds so 1 gram per pound maybe a little hard to do. I did some research on creatine, and it sounds like something I may try in about 3 months like you suggested. Again thank for your help. Alan

Al, There is no need for protein to feed your fat.  It should be per pound of what you would weigh if you had normal fat.  So maybe based on 170-220 pounds, something in that range.  Maybe you allow a bit more than "ideal" on the assumption that you are supporting more muscle than most normal men your height. IMHO, 1g/lb is not necessary.  Protein companies and many body builders say that, and their experience tells them it works (and it probably does).  But most scientific studies suggest little if any marginal benefit above perhaps 1/2 to 2/3 that amount.  But give malabsorption and the stress of weight loss, a minimum would be 1.0g/kg, and 1.5g/kg wouldn't be unreasonable.  For a 220 pound man (at 15-20% body fat), that's 100-150 grams.  I personally target about 120 grams, at 6'0".
