Gout
Hi Guys im 6 months out and now have lost 170 lbs, i was hoping as i lost weight one of my big problems would have gone away. But i actually think its getting worse becuase of all the protein i have to eat. I have been getting gout at least once a month. Anyone dealing with gout the way i am, and if so what do you do to keep it under control.
Follow your Dr.'s orders. Gout can be common with WLS because of the high protein required. I thought I would get it since both my brothers have it and I have high uric acid in my system. Haven't gotten it yet though. Maybe check Web MD or other sites that may help. I think it should go away after you stabilize awhile and can introduce more carbs and vegetables into your diet. Brian
I feel for you because my case of gout post-WLS was the most pain I've ever been in. BRUTAL. Rapid weight loss and a high protein diet are the root cause as this combo increases the level of uric acid the body produces.
Not much you can do once an attack begins so the key is preventing the attacks. I was able to completely eliminate my attacks by:
1.eliminating all organ meats and shell fish I ate (eg liver, shrimp, lobster, etc.).
2. ate black cherries which seemed to help.
3. increased the amount of water I drank in order to flush the uric acid.
4. doctor prescribed Allopurinol which I took for a week
5. backed off red meat for a while and replaced the protein with cottage cheese
After a couple of months, no more gout attacks.
Best of luck.
Gout is one of the main reasons I had WLS. I actually left the hospital with a gout attact and in more pain from that then the surgery. What I found out is the rapid weight loss causes gout attacks. Also I had my knee drained and they found blood in the liquid so I had a MRI and then minor knee surgery as I get the attacks in my knee. After the knee surgery I have not had any problems. Hopefully when your weight loss slows down so will the gout. Good luck, I know how bad gout sucks.
