Military Question
Hey guys, I was wondering, I have always wanted to join the USAF or the USAF reserve and I know that a lot of things can disqualify you from joining and sadly I have heard RNY is one of them. My question to you all is do you know of ANY way that I may be able to join the military post surgery? I had puit my surgery off for 3 years because I wanted to join the military and feared that it may not happen if I do. Any suggestions?
I know they have really, really, REALLY loosened the enlistment requirements over the last 3 years, but as to RNY, I do not know. I think the age limit is now all the way up to 43. I have two very good friends in the military and could ask them, but a call to the local recruiter office would probably be the best approach.
You might want to check out becoming a foreign service officer or specialist for the Department of State, if the military is not an option. I would love to do that, but am disqualified by other medical issues.
Good luck.

There was someone on the DS forum that wantded to join the military and he was told that RNYers and DSers are disqualified because the military cannot promise that you will be able to meet your medically necessary dietary requirements.....protein, water, vitamins..etc.
You might want to contact a local recruiting office just to confirm.....and also find out if there is a WLS that you can have that won't disqualify you....for example the VSG is a restrictive only procedure that requires no fills, and after about 6 months you can get adequate nutrition from food. Also with this procedure it can be converted to the RNY or DS at a later time (if needed)
