Fruits (the kind you eat silly)

OK gang, need a little input.  I'm looking to start getting more fruit in my diet, considering putting fruit in my protein shakes.  I've done a little research on the nutritional values of my old favorites, bananas, blueberries and strawberries.  Apparantly, bananas have a whopping 24 grams of sugar per cup, blueberries about 15 and strawberries about 10.  I guess my question is, how do these sugars affect us vs. sugars that are added to foods?  I usually use a cup of milk for my protein shakes, which has 11 grams of sugar, with no ill affects.  Is there a difference in the way we (meaning RNY'es) tolerate natural sugar vs. added sugar?  Any feedback would be appreciated.  I know I could try this on my own and see how it affects me, but I'd rather be safe than sorry and see how others have done.  Thanks all. John

I thought it would be great to start eating alot of fruit....good for you right?....but hold on....I wasn't dropping weight as fast as I thought I should. Come to find out from the ole' doc that eating to much fruit is putting worthless surger in your diet. That's the last thing I need. I'll eat some straw berries or blue berries some time but that's about it. Maybe it's different for other guy's. Dave (from Ohio)

Sugar is sugar whether it's fructose, dextrose, or any other variety.  Should you eat fruit?  Sure, just don't go crazy.  The grams per cup that you mention aren't really that bad if you can limit yourself on the amount you eat.  This is the end of blueberry season in NJ.  I love blueberries and eat about 10 lbs a week for 4 weeks out of the year.  I don't eat any other fruit like that.  So, I splurge for a month on fruit.  What's that really come to?  Try 1,600 calories from 10 lbs of blueberries in a week.  And, I look forward to blueberry season every year.  Why 10 lbs?  I can't pick 'em because of bad knees and the local farm sells them by the pint or by the 10 lb box.

John,  If it weren't for fruit in my protein drink I don't think I could choke the things down anymore. I usually chop up 3 strawberries or dump a small handful of blueberries in the blender and whip everything together. I can't seem to down enough to get my protein in everyday yet, so this is an option I've been using for a few weeks now. I always seem to stay a little more "regular:" when I have a little bit of fruit in my diet anyways so this seems to help me in added ways.  Haven't had any issues with dumping, foamies or anything else unless,in my usual patient manner I manage to try to down it too fast.   I tried bananas but they didn't blend too well for me. Chopped up OK but the fruit part wants to float to the top and not stay mixed real good with the milk and powder so I gave up on that. I didn't realize how much sugar naners had but still had no trouble with them settlin in the "tummy".  Hope this helps some...............Bill

i only do the fruits like strawberries and bananas in my protein shakes - usually from smoothie king or smoothie factory.  I do however eat a lot of watermelon, cantaloupe and honey dew.  Dont know what the sugar in those are.  I think mostly water..... Hope it help.  Sean

No "shakes" for me, But lots of fruit. Strawberries, Blueberries and apples are my most common choices. Oranges when they are on sale, and a good bit of pineapple to. I went on "an apple a day" challenge, and made it 275 days without a miss. I still have about 5 a week. My favorites are Granny Smith and Fuji apples, Lots of fiber, lots of nutrients. I rarely, if ever, dump from eating fruit. Early on I would if I had Juice, So I stopped having Juice. Just the whole fruit, nothing but the fruit! I still have a touch of ‘dumping’ if I have many grapes…. so I rarely have those, but no problem with melon. Some folks claim they do. I make a Cantaloupe and cucumber mix-salad and eat on that a few days a week. I don’t much like bananas, so no loss there for me… I find that I eat a lot of fresh produce And very little canned stuff, unless it’s beans Or rotel tomatoes. Best Wishes- Dx
