Calcium Info?
When just starting out? Vitamins are on the low rung on the ladder…. Water (Hydration), Prevention of infection, and rest, and pain management, Then Nutrition, And that would be protein first, then other nutrients needed to have the energy to heal… THEN, the Vitamins and Minerals get to be Primary importance the further out you get... My doc also puts his patient on – Kids Vits +Iron, and Tums for the first 3 to 6 weeks. Even says- take them 4 hours apart… He also puts ALL of his patients on an anti-depressant to prevent post-surgical depression. Also- previcid or similar… His rationale for the Tums, is easy on the pouch and acid absorption… The Kids Vitamins +iron seem to work just fine. No dump or distress from sugar at all. THEN, He Moves his patients to Calcium Citrate, and gives a list of How much of which Vitamins and minerals he recommends. His nurse has a printout of- "These are some that have all of those Vits and Minerals…" She even discusses prices that other patients are paying for theirs. This is about the time he has patients advance to adding more veggies. Blood work at 3 weeks, Blood work at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, year one, Then every 6 months after… He attends our local support group every other month and the Baptist Memorial Head of Nutrition meets every other month as well. The recommendation is for Calcium Citrate, and the dosage Should be regulated based on your Bloodwork Rater than "We should all take _________mgs of Calcium..." Everyone has minor (or even Major) Differences in how they absorb stuff post-op. I think the problem some have with the "Still on Tums and Flintstones" folks, is that apparently the information they got was incomplete or they have failed to advance their intake. There are people at 1 year or 2 year out saying- "Flintstones and Tums is "The Way to Go!" You know? For them it maybe…. I’ve seen people who take a truckload of Bariatric Formulated $$High Powered Vitamins, who have turned around and had horrible Vitamin deficiency issues. I would assume the opposite is true Some of the Time as well. Some people can get along fine on Tums and Flintstones…. Best Wishes- Dx
I have an Azz-Load of Calcium info.... It's too much crap to read through...unless it suddenly becomes important.. It usually "becomes important" once post-op Nutrition problems crop up.... I'll re-post it .... Capricious; Impulsive, Semi-Predictable
