Protein Bioavailability at one meal
Hi,
I have heard that the amount of protein that we can utilize at one meal is limited to a low number of grams, like 20-30 grams per meal or protein shake.
That essentially says that any amount of protein above that limit is wasted.
Does anyone have a link to a website that discusses this protein limitation?
I am trying to learn more about this.
I think it's 30-35 grams every 3 hours for a non-op person. No one really seems to know the average absorption for someone with an RNY. Generally, people are taking 30-50 gram servings.
Bodybuilding web sites are full of lore, and some have people taking different types of protein different times of the day (Whey protein in the morning, slow-to-digest casein protein before bed, for example). You can google your protein questions and come up with a lot of answers, some based on research, some based on the desire to market and sell protein.
Maybe some of the other guys have better information. Most nutritionists say 1 gram per day per kilogram of ideal lean body mass. Then, no more than 30-35 grams every 3 hours.
Hope this Helps,
Dave
I have yet to see any scientific studies done on RNYers or DSers to say "this is how much we absorb at one time" ...even if that was the case it would still vary depending on how much intestine is bypassed...proximal RNY vs. Distal RNY...vs. 50 cm common channel DS.. etc etc.
The "educated guess" i've heard is that we can not absorb more then 40 grams of protein at one time...but more likely closer to 30 to 35. If this is true of not, I'm not sure, because I honestly don't think there is anyone that knows.

Hey Wendell....
You know they sell proteinin 40-60 grams containers, ment to be consumed at one time...so I don;t think there is too much of a problem...
you may just burn it off in calories, if your body does not use it as protein...as opposed to carbs or fat...
just my 2 cents
