Bob, I had surgery about 3 hours from my home.  When I was released, my wife drove me home.  I had very little discomfort, but I was still on pain medication.  We stopped every hour and I walked a bit.  I had some bottled water in the car and some liquid protein.  Therefore, I don't think it would be necessary for you to stay for a week in a hotel.

Why not do both? 250 miles is a long haul. Stop half way and stay the night. Then finish the next day. A lot of people are off pain meds by noon the day after surgery, so no need to expect the pain. If you have pain, you can take the meds.

Best Wishes,

Dave

Surgery that Monday? Probably get out of the hospital by Wednesday. If you only booked a room for that Wednesday night The kids would still be out Monday through Thursday, right? So the drive back would put them in just for Friday. What’s One day? Once you get to Saturday, Seeing the doc would be nearly as time consuming as driving back. That said, Unless you’re out in the wilderness at your home, anything that crops up could be seen to at a local emergency room Like hydration or such. If you’re hanging near the doc till you’re feeling better, Or worrying about pain riding home, I’d say make the drive on home. Pop a pain pill on your way to the car and nap on the drive home. Do plan a pit stop to stretch your legs But you should be fine. You’ll do better in your own house than dealing with the Discomfort of a hotel added to the discomfort of early post-op. If possible, head home. If not, Grab a room. I’d let it be a "wait and see" sort of plan. Just my thoughts…. Best Wishes- Dx

In my humble opinion, if you can't use the motel room for the real reason it was intended, why bother? You probably won't want sex for at least a few hours after the surgery. Seriously, just take the ride home, go slow and stay hydrated.

Ditto Jim.  I had a 45 min drive each way to the hospital and came home 3 days after surgery.  Riding in the car wasn't a problem at all.  I could have gone to sleep except I didn 't want to take the pain meds except to sleep at night.  If your wife drops you off, its a 4 hr surgery and another hour or two in the recovery area so it was like 7 or 8 p.m, before I got the room.  She'd be good dropping you off and maybe leaving after they take you into prep and coming to get you a couple of days later unless there are problems, in which case, I am sure they'd call her if she wanted to make arrangements to be avaiable to be there.  It goes by fast and you're not going to be good company for more than an hour at a time anyway between xrays and walking and sleeping.  And you can talk to her on the phone. You'll be fine and want to be home rather than a hotel.  And if for any reason you are not fine,...you'll be staying in the hospital rather than a hotel anyway. Hang in there chief.  Its going to be a walk in the park.

Why not leave the kids with a frined or family member so they don't miss any school ? This will also leave the wife freer to do her wifely duties.

If not I like the drive half way the day you get out, spend the night then finish the trip the next day.
