Psyche Eval II question

Should I let the Dr know he is a second opinion ? I didn't go through my PCP for a referral so he won't know about the 1st. Should I say something or just wait and see. I feel like I should tell him up front but at the same time I don't want him to say, let me get a copy of that before we proceed.

BOB M   you out there

I’d be inclined to just ask for his evaluation. That’s what you’re paying for. If I was having a ring appraised, I’d want an honest appraisal from a pro, Not a "hedged bet" or someone hoping to jive with his peers. Yes? If he asks, be honest about it, But a 2nd opinion is foremost, an Opinion. It should stand alone of it’s own merits Not be dependant on another’s input. Hope you have a great one! Best Wishes- Dx

The less info you give him the better.

One other thing…. This is from a Doc ( over at "my other board")- Dr. Marcy… A speaker for some of the OH events http://www.obesityhelp.com/member/drmarcy/

Some time back she passed this advice on to a pre-op Who was headed into a Psyche-Eval… I saved it…. I have passed it on often… "As a psychologist who does psych evals for wls patients (among others) I can tell you what I look for. I usually want to make sure the patient has a clear understanding of the surgery and what accommodations/changes they will need to make after surgery is over. Do they have unrealistic expectations for their recovery, weight loss, life after surgery? I also want to see about their support system: do they have one? If are they engaged in support systems, groups, perhaps, even weekly therapy sessions. Most important: Is the patient suffering from any severe mental illnesses that may prevent them from having a normal healthy recovery. Will the illness escalate? Are they stable? Are there any other addictions that they are covering up (drug/alcohol use). Will any of these complicate surgery and/or endanger the patients life. If they are stable and have a condition such as Bi-Polar Disorder many times they are ok'd. Mostly, I just speak to the patients. I may give the MMPI II (the 500 questions exam) but usually I give the Beck Depression Scale Questionnaire. I speak to them and I let them tell me their story. I hope that helps. Marcy" I hope this helps. Best Wishes- Dx

I agree with the group.   Get an unbiased opinion, that is why you have selected him.   If he ask well that another question.. . .  Otherwise, just see what he has to say.  it's your $$$,   From what I have found out with my evaluation it really isn't much unless you do have a serious challenge at which if you do, I'm sure the new psychologist will note it... Best of Luck, keep us informed Mike Ray

My Psych eval was a joke. Lasted less than 3 minutes. I assume he and the surgeon have a good working relationship which mutually benefits each other.

Thanks guys for the heads up! I go in for my psych eval on tomorrow (thursday). I think I have a balanced view from both sides of the surgery now.
