Hey all -  I am at a stang still.  I am 4 weeks post op and I have been at a stand still for the weight loss for a week.  I have been going back and forth for a week between 345 and 350.  I cant seem to loose!!!  What the heck is going on?  I start to doubt myself and what I did.  I think - 'Did I rupture my stomach and stomach acid is leaking inside??'  Why am I not loosing any more weight.  I have not gotten the OK to go back to the gym. I dont understand.  I have followed the soft solid diet.  My food consists of egg beater in the morning, jello cup mid morning, lunch is 3 peices of lunch meat rolled in 3 pieces of cheese, mid afternoon is jello pudding, dinner is switch between tuna, fish, and chicken.   HELP!! Any suggestions??? Sean

Sean, the "3 Week-Out Stall" is very typical! ------------------------------------------------- sorry to just cut/paste from an old post, But it saves an azz-load of typing……. Slow Loss? Explanation…

There’s an 8 to 10lb. volume of "wiggle room" due to water alone. And it comes into play a lot. This has to do with our bodies using glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, But it is stored in our muscles for quick energy – One pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, And the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, (Like when you drop down to your calorie intake) Your body turns first to stored glycogen, Which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, You also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it Voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of any diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, Your body starts to ‘realize’ that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue And burning fat for energy. But your body also ‘realizes’---- (by way of your liver releasing hormones signaling low Cal intake) ---That fat can't be used for short bursts of energy – Like, to outrun a sabertooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, And rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, (Thus showing negative Calorie load overall) Your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while As you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored. Yes? The whole ‘weight-loss’ process is not a straight "Slide" down the scale. More like "Stair-Steps," (Down then forward, then down, then forward, etc... As your body cycles fat out of "deep storage" and through the Liver Into the muscles as Glycogen. The muscles and Liver can hold about a 3 weeks supply. This is why many people find that their "Stall" or "Plateau" Breaks when adding a bit of exercise And upping their water intake, or in the case of an "extreme exerciser," The total Calorie or Protein Intake, To signal the liver to let go of more Glycogen. Fear not, many people who are now enjoying life at a normal BMI Once had a few weeks or so of thinking- "...my weight loss has been awfully slow, has it stopped..."? Maybe up the walking/Exercise, and maybe add more protein Without adding Too many Calories. And, keep the water intake high. Hope this helps some. Keep it Up! Best Wishes- Dx

Sean,  I too stalled at this point. But,I'd just read something that Dx had put up similar to what he's posting now. I also find that I stall for about every 2 1/2 weeks for a week. Then when the stall is over I have to lose 3 or 4 pounds that I lost already. Worst part is I already claimed those few pounds and can't claim them again. Don't know of any solutions or quick fixes as I'm not all that far ahead(little over 2 weeks) of you but one thing I'm figuring out (thanks to Dx and the "regulars",again) don't live and die by the scale. Period. End.   I now am trying to do the once a week weigh in and live with that. The curiosity wants to kill me some days though.   Don't sweat the small stuff, and I'm told in the end its all small stuff. You'll do fine, stick with your program and the Dr.s advice and rules and it'll all come out in the end.   My problem with that statement is that its usually not MY schedule and thats where my problem lies, but along with the other changes that are going on in my life right now I'm working on changing this one also.   See ya down the road............Bill

Been there done that. I too went through a stall earlier on and it drove me crazy. I think that my body went in to starvation mode. I was very successful on my pre-cert diet for ins. and after surgery when my intake went to nothing, compared to pre-surgery I think my body thought I was trying to starve it. I upped my calories and went to five small meals a day and that seemed to kick start it again. I know it sounds crazy and it seemed the same to me. Eat more to loose weight. One thing that helped me track my progress was to get a monthly planner and once a week I record my weight. I will admit I weigh my self more than that, but I only record it once a week. I do it on thursday because that was the day I had surgery. I can look at my planner and tell you what I weighed as the  weeks progressed. Last thursday, week 31, I weighed 198. I weighed in sunday at 195 for the weekly weigh in. If you can do it, the best thing is to not get obsessed with the scales. Easier said than done.  pan head

Sean, wish I could help but I am only one week out.  Glad you haven gotten the ok to start working out at the gym.  I'm sure that will help.  I doubt if you ruptured your stomach, I think you would have other major signs, fever, etc.   What part of Houston, I'm in South Houston and by the way  thanks for including your diet,  Gosh, I'd give $100.00 for either breakfast, lunch or dinner  that you are eating now.   I'm still of liquids. Anyway, hang in there.   I'm sure you will get some good advice from the guys. Mike Ray

I don't see the 60+ grams of protein and minimum 64 oz of daily water intake required for continuing rapid weightloss. Lack of either slows the process significantly. I am available for more detail if you are interested. Joe

I don't own a scale, and for the very reasons that you posted. It'll drive you nuts! I just wait till my next Doctor appointment to get weighed because I don't need the added stress of comparing one weeks weight loss with the next.
