I am 12 days out and doing well except for one thing. I wake up around 7:00 AM and eat my breakfast. Then I walk a little over a mile, Later I get real sleepy. Just about the time I am to drink my protein drink about 10:30 AM. I just can't seem to stay awake. The same thing happens in the middle of the afternoon around 3:00 PM. Anyone have any idea what is happening?

yeah, you're recovering! give yourself a break. this is major surgery. you need time to heal. i promise you'll have energy to spare in the coming months but right now listen to your body and just sleep, nap, rest or do whatever it tells you. there's no shame in being tired and going back to bed. for me, i didn't work for over a month. i just needed a lot of time before i felt i had the stamina to work. others are back to work to in few days! it's not a contest so just relax and rest. that's the best thing you can do for yourself. you're not different and nothing is wrong. now go back to bed.....carbonblob

Sounds like you are tired.  You might want to try resting.

I slept a lot for 2-3 weeks after surgery.  I came straight home from work and was wiped out. Also, look at the carb count in your meals.  For me, I don't think I really have much of a tendency to dump in the violent sense, but I do get really sleepy if I eat lots of simple carbs at once.

The same exact thing happened to me at that time too! My clinic told me that it was likely related to the anastesia, they said the effects of anastesia in an obese person could linger for up to  a month. Couple that with the healing, low calorie and water intake and you've got a couple good reasons to feel so run down, but tike the other guys said, it will get better soon. For now, listen to your body, if you're tired, take it easy if you can.

I know it took me about 3-4 weeks to get back 100%.  I know that it takes 3-4 weeks to get the anestitha out of your system (my spelling sucks I know).   If you tired, tke a break, sleep for a hour, then drink.  Take it easy though.. Sean

Thanks guys, your advice is greatly appreciated. I took a nap this afternoon when I was real tired and I feel much better now. My biggest concern was that I would sleep through one of my protean shake times between meals, which I did. Maybe I'm being a bit too time regulated. Just trying to do everything to make this work. Thanks again Michael

I am 5 days out and have a question.  I had my surgery in the VA Hospital and sometimes the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.  You mentioned you have breakfast then a little later have your protein drink.  Are you still only on liquids?  If so, what are you having for breakfast , lunch, dinner?  I drink a protein drink (glucernia) for breakfast, lunch, dinner and water and juices in between.   I'm off my pain meds, feel sort of ok, just tired, weak, uncomfortable, etc. Mike
