Oops Have you done this

Hey guys, I am 10 weeks out this coming Tuesday and was wondering, last night I had my first real "oops" moment. Without even thinking I topped off a big glass of water in like 3 swallows....It was but maybe 4ounces but considering before that I had 8 ounces of milk with my protein shake I think the new misses (the pouch) got upset because within 5 mins a big glopp of milk/water/protein shake just came up and than after that I had some gas in there and by the time I hit the bed it was gone.....Have any of you guys done this? Is there a way to avoid it or it is one of those things mind over matter? It didn't hurt when I threw up but I know throwing up to much can not be good for the pouch.  Oh, do you know when they consider the pouch fully healed?

S, Yep, that "Learning Curve" can be a biotche. Eventually it’s less of an issue. As long as it’s liquid, I can almost gulp down 16 ozs now-a-days. Really not much different than my pre-op self. "Healed" is a little loose on the time line Because everyone heals at a different speed. Typically, the more conservative Bariatric Programs don’t advance their patients to Crispy Veggies and "Everything" until 18th week. They typically estimate the post-surgical swelling in the pouch To hang around through the 5th month. It’s around then (the 5th to 6th month) That many find their pouch "loosening up" And that capacity of how much can be eaten at once increases. That’s why it’s important to use that first 6 months to set up new habits So you’re not pushing the limits the whole time… At around 6months, those "limits" slack off a bit And you’re left with habit and choices. Follow? As far as "Forgetting?" I did that several times early on… grabbed a bite of something sweet without even thinking- Or took a swig of Dr. Pepper once…. Like I had drank a Prune Juice / Drain-O ****tail! Still at 4 years post-op, if I eat or drink too fast? Even when it all goes down and stays down fine I will "gurgle" loud enough to cause the dog to bark. 10 weeks? You’re just coming up on the Easy part! Best Wishes- Dx

Some people say you aren't fully healed for months, but I think at ten weeks it's very unlikely you actually did any physical damage. I had trouble with even normal swallows of water for a couple months after surgery.  I had a couple incidents like yours with water.  I switched to Crystal Light and other flavored beverages only.  The flavor somehow reminded me that something was going down and I needed to be careful.  Still, I would often poor a lot into my mouth, remember, and then hold it in my mouth while I took tiny sips off it. Now, at 16 weeks, I can drink pretty water much like a normal person, unless I've eaten too recently or done something like you described (just downed a big glass of milk, for example).  But I've gotten better about doing it right subconsciously, and I'm also more attuned to warnings from my stomach that I need to stop or slow down.

Yeah I am at 6 months and still if I try to gulp I pay for it, not so much regurge but a little discomfort.

At pre op classes I asked people with RNY what is your vomiting like?  They said it is like baby spit up.  I really didn't understand until it happened to me.  That is the best way to explain the reflex.  Does that sound right?  Brian

My sips have become slightly bigger now, at almost 8 weeks out, kind of like small gulps.  Usually no more than 2 swallows though.  Is that a problem, I find it so hard to just sip anything, and still actually get fluids in.

At 7 months out, I can drink faster than I could when I was fresh out of the OR but it is still no were close to like what I used to be able to do. I can take about 2 to 3 normal swallows then I get the DANGER, FULL, DO NOT ADD MORE signal from the pouch and I need to wait about 10 minutes and then drink slowly from then on. I used to be able to put away a 2ltr bottle of diet Pepsi in about 5 minutes without batting an eye! For the most part, I will take about an hour to drink 1ltr of crystal light, in smaller amounts but steady when I need to get liquids in. I drink slower when I am not in a "rush"
Get it hot, hit it HARD,
