Hi Guys, not sure how to put this one.  Our family suffered a tough loss today.  My wife's aunt (the youngest of 10 kids at 44) died of a heart attack this morning during a job interview.  Maria weighed I guess about 380 or so.  I know we talked about the surgery but her insurance would not cover the cost because too many people were having it (she was in the school system).  I share this not so much as a warning to those of us one the board (we all have had those worries), but rather because of how my wife reacted towards me.   There are times when we have fought about my weight, today we cried in thankfulness and sorrow.  Sorrow for the loss of Maria, and thankfulness that I had the surgery and have lost 123 lbs.  Something about my wife in tears saying "I'm so glad you had this surgery".  Wow.   Anyway, for some reason I had to share that with you guys.  Thank you so much for all your support of me during this journey. Blessings, Greg

Greg, That is a very specific and pointed- "There, but for the grace….." moment. It does make one grateful that there is this life saving procedure available… Sorry for your family’s loss. Glad it’s not you they’re losing too. Best Wishes- Dx

Sorry for your loss Greg, my condolences. I'm having the surgery and I have felt I started exploring it to late in life, or that I'm not going to make it that long.  I look forward to having a chance at a tool that works with me in the change of life program.   I mentioned having the surgery to a supervisor in the church 6 years ago only to have her say that it doesn't go along with Christian principles.  That made me struggle with it and put it off for 6 long years.  But, I'm here at the turning point now, it's so close I can almost smell it....Faaarrrttt.  yeah.

Greg, My condolences on your family's loss. Your story is a touching reminder that morbid obesity is often a family condition because our health issues affect our loved ones. It's also a reminder of how complicated the choice to have or not have surgery is, involving as it does comparing the immediate risks and post-op restrictions associated with surgery and the long-term risks of not having it. I am always especially saddened when a morbidly obese person seems to die, more or less, from obesity or its fellow travelers. I was always afraid that I'd die that way, yet unable to conquer my MO. I worried about my wife and family and, yet, as much I loved them, just could not break the cycle--for them or for me. So when one of "us" dies early as your wife's aunt did, it seems particularly tragic to me. So, like you and your wife, my wife and I find ourselves ever more grateful that surgery has given us a second chance at life. Whatever follows and however much time we are allotted, we have already been more fortunate than so many others. Thank you for sharing your experience. It means a great deal.

Doug

Prayers for your family are on the way. I know that with my WLS came the bonus of finding a tumor on my left kidney that had not been detected before. I count this as a blessing of the WLS as by the time that it would have been a problem, it would have been too late. DAMN insurance companies try to suck every cent from you and are very tight about giving it back out for the most part. I have been blessed with a GOOD company, Health Net. They gave the green light to my surgery on the first try and have been very easy to deal with. I am sorry for your families loss, God bless.
