Thanks guys, glad to find out it's more common.  Thank God for this board.. LOL!   Mike, you're right also, some people give ya that 'gonna find a new woman when you're skinny?"  Heck no!  This woman loved me at 300, she loved me at my highest of 650, why the heck would I wanna train .. er.. get a new one?" Seriously, it amazes me how many misconceptions are out there.  I also get the ones who insist on telling me all the horror stories..  "You know this could kill ya?" My reply to that is simply 'how many old 600 pound men do you know?'  The way I see it, this is saving my life.  Yes, I've considered all the other options.  Yes, I've tried 'a diet'.  No, I can't just 'stop eating'  for a while .. THanks guys. Dale

Pancreatitis.

That's what I tell inappropriate people, be they clients, vendors, co-workers or even family, that pry beyond the casual questions about my rapid, massive weight loss.  I tell them I got pancreatitis  and had to get very serious about my diet. Unless of course, they are morbidly obese, too, and coming from what I believe to be a genuine place with their inquiry. In which case, I will sit with them as long as they like and go through the whole thing. In the end, it is nobody's business but your own. Well your spouse, too, if you have one. We face discrimination and ignorance every day being morbidly obese. Although we can change, the world will unfortunately never face a shortage of ignorant people.  I hate to lie, ever. But I have no problem telling a "white lie" to appease an ignorant person inquiring about something that is absolutely none of their business. If you are still trying to convince yourself that this is the best course for you with your health, that is another story. Gain all the knowledge you can, but from appropriate professional and persons who have been through it themselves. As far as everyone else is concerned, I would suggest keeping your plans private. The less ignorant people know about your plans, the less opportunity they have to express their opinions. Just my two cents, your mileage will vary. JP

I've heard all the same things, from taking the easy way out to "why don't you just eat less?" (most of these come from thin people).  I have been very open about this whole thing and for the most part have received very positive feedback and support.  My boss told me to take care of myself and worry about work after that. It's hardly worth the effort to respond to the comments.  If someone is that naive why bother.  I've lost over 100 lbs 3 times.  I'm very good at losing weight.  I've also gained more than 100 lbs 3 times (I'm even better at gaining weight). In the end what really matters is how you feel (it makes it so much easier with the support of my family) and what you are doing for yourself (and the family). But....if anyone else disagrees.....SCREW 'EM. Brian

There is a saying that may be appropriate here: "Never argue with an idiot, they will only pull you down to their level and then beat you with experience." Works for me.

Absolutely love this thread!  I realized the same thing that you did.  I used to be very open with people and when anyone commented on me losing weight,  I would tell that I has WLS.   After getting too many blank stares as they're thinking that I took the easy way out, I simply thank them for noticing and change the subject.  Or I might talk about the excercising that I am now doing.  I no longer mention WLS since it is not really any of their business. Of course anyone close to me already knows that I went through WLS and are generally very supportive. - Barry
