Never had any issues with water unless I tried to chug.  Even then, I wouldn't call it pain.  Make sure he is sipping.

Quoted the above for emphasis. I haven't had any issues, unless I try to chug.  I can get maybe two or three swallows in a row, and the third one can be uncomfortable. This is me nearliy a year out. As ever, your mileage may vary.

Sounds like his problem not yours. My Surgeons Asst. told me tha****er and liquid moves right through your stoma. It can be like a funnel, if you chug a lot of liquid it will back up but it will run right through. He told me they tell you to sip at first because we have to let everything heal and they do not want to stress your stoma. It sounds like you should tell him you are worried about him. I am 6 1/2 months out and I have no pain when I drink. I get a minimum of 64oz a day without any problems at all. Well except for all the ******g. When everything is healed there should be no pain. I feel perfectly normal. I eat what I should and don't eat what I shouldn't and I have no pain. Pain is normally a sign of something wrong. pan head

I'm 11 months out and never have any pain associated with drinking, ever.  However, the first couple of months, it was easy to take in gas along with whatever liquid I was drinking. During that time, I avoided straws, took small sips, and closed my mouth before swallowing. These sound a little silly, but they worked great to minimize the gas.   It very well could be that you are drinking a little more conservatively than your fellow loser.  If you're concerned at all, then just ask your doc about it.  Always keep in mind that we are ALL different.

This may be obvious, but you didn't mention it so...Is he drinking his water on ice or straight out of the fridge...A lot of people (not everybody) including myself experience some pretty mild to severe discomfort in their esophogas when drinking cold or even hot liquids. For some reason after surgery some people develop this "spasm" response - I don't really know why, just that I have found while not as refreshing - drinking water that is just slightly cool or even room temperature is much less uncomfortable for me... I think that your absence of pain is not really an issue at all just as long as you are remembering to not drink for at least thirty minutes before eating (to avoid filling your pouch and not leaving room for enough food for adequate nourishment) and you are not drinking for thirty minutes after (so you stay fuller longer helping to keep you from eating again too soon and avoid rapid gastric emptying which could lead to poor digestion and even dumping). Good luck
