Anyone Else Pigging out & Not Gaining?
Hi Guys,
I drink a lot of water, get a lot of protein and exercise a lot, but my ability to eat and not gain weight has gotten extreme. One day, I ate five ice cream bars and didn't gain and on Saturdays and Sundays, I've given my wife the go ahead to bake sweets. I know some of those days, I've eaten 15 or so high calorie cookies, in addition to other food and along with milk. I'm sure I'm over 4000 calories, but don't gain an ounce. Anyone else got this?
(You saw my pics, I guess. I've been pigging out like this for a couple of months with no ill effects).
Maybe if we exercise, get our protein and water we don't gain? Any such luck?
Best Wishes,
Dave
Hi CB,
Sounds like you're in the same boat as me. I don't think I'm eating large quantities of anything solid that would stretch the pouch (possible?), but I'm wondering if anything but my exercise and water drinking habits have really changed. Feel great though. I think I could change my habits if I had to lay off on the exercise. Sometimes I really do think water washes the food through so fast that the calories don't digest. Or, perhaps dilutes any remaining digestive chemicals (?). But I don't drink within one hour of any meal, vitamins or protein. My bypass is 150 cm, so maybe one foot longer than average, too.
Hmm...

Hi Scott,
Never know who to believe on this issue, but maybe a lot of your distance is "steady-state", as oppsed to Fartlek or intervals, sprints. My understanding is, that for marathon training, some of this is necessary, but if you do too much it can actually make you gain weight in the long run.
Here's an article on aerobic exercise
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/henkin4.htm
Basically, he's saying you don't want to look like Richard Simmons or many aerobics instructors (lots of exercise, but still pudgy).

Hi Mike,
That's a good idea. Solid protein before splurging on any cookies or ice cream.
As for blown stomas...
One of the M.D. research abstracts I read on the SAGES site, actually talked about a prosthesis for blown out stomas, so I know it is possible in some cases. You gotta wonder how much these people are eating, though. When I eat I lot, it's mostly sweets or other soft stuff.
What I'm seeing is simple carbs not turning into fat. Wonder if you could ask your doc if the bypass actually rushes the carbs through so much that they aren't even hitting the papilli, or if water is diluting digestive juices so much, that calories aren't getting in (if you have time, that is...)
Thanks,
Dave
Yup... Me, too.
Right now, I'm eating about 3200-3500 cals a day (with a 4000 cal day thrown in here & there). However, rarely do I eat any food with little nutritional value. I have been known to throw in a light beer or two once in a while.
With all of my swimming, biking, running, elliptical & lifting... the scale still creeps downward. 6'1" - 188lbs. I had my body fat checked twice in the last week: 9.6%. If I had my extra skin removed, I'd most likely be under 170.
I spread my calories out over the course of the day (I eat every 1 1/2 - 2 hours) and try to keep the percentages at 20% Fat, 50% Complex Carbs & 40% Protein.
I couldn't eat more if I tried without starting to add in some high fat / high calorie / sugar-laden foods... and I ain't going down that road ever again.
I guess this is how normal, healthy men, with no weight problems, and who exercise regularly can eat!
All I know is... I'm liking the new trend.
Be Well,
A.J.
