Hello all,
I have my initial consultation with Dr. Dewitt today at 3:00 cst. I have been to the informational seminar and I really feel that gastric bypass is my only hope of losing weight and keeping it off. I have spoken with my pcp about rny and he is not very supportive of the surgery. I was put on Diabetes meds about one year ago and have gained about 50 lbs over the last year. I was on Avandaril and something else that I can't remember the name of. My a1c which at the time was about 13 dropped to 6.3 with the meds. So the meds are controlling my sugar but I am gaining weight. I expect to weigh around 400 lbs at the appointment today.
I have some photos in my profile that show the reason that I am willing to put myself at risk with the surgery. She will be 2 in september and I really want to be around to walk her down the aisle some day. Or to quietly get rid of the person that harms my little girl.
well I guess that is enough for today.

ps. I have been lurking for about 2yrs and really miss some of the old regulars. The wad, Buckeye and boss'ngagi come to mind, anyone ever hear from them?
Randy,
I spent a long time mulling the idea of surgery and then trying to get it approved. Over six years ago, I was in law school and my PCP strongly suggested RNY; back then with my doc (also a med-school professor) and the university hospital behind me, it would have been as simple as saying 'yes' and scheduling it for a few weeks later. But I decided I could do it myself, and pretty much did, losing from 340 to 220 over the next year. Five years after that, I walked into Dr. Dewitt's office at 375. I don't regret many decisions in my life, but turning down RNY six years ago is one of them. Some things you just have to learn for yourself.
Dewitt is an excellent surgeon with a very good staff behind him. Anecdotal testimonials are only worth so much, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Good luck.
Welcome aboard.
RNY is a blessing for many of us (as are the other types of weight loss surgery). It's too bad so many folks--even some docs--have, perhaps, misconceptions.
Your little 2 year old reason for wanting to live longer and better is a great reason for surgery. With that kind of motivation, I'm betting you'll do fine.
Good luck with your PCP. If he/she continues to be resistant, it may be time to find another doc.
Either way, good luck.

Hey Randy...
on my own first consult, I was 404....yipes! but 10 months later, after much travel and consultations and a solid mind-set that I HAD to get RNY -- on Oct 3/06 I did just that. Since then, I've lost 150 lbs, and 17" off my waist and I'm in "love" with how I now feel.
risk? yup, there is a large risk involved in this surgery - in all surgeries I guess. but for me there was no way I could NOT take that risk. my own pcp was VERY VERY supportive and for that I will always be thankful - she was also the person who finally said to me that it I did NOT do something, I wouldn't live longer than another decade at the most! that scared the hell outta me, and that launched my own quest for RNY.
so....in my mind RNY is a lifesaver! and I think many many here feel the same way - oh, it's not the "answer" to my weight problem, but it did give me a "tool" to use to fight that myself...and for that I'll be forever grateful!
