Greg, I had the VSG last October. I was 320 LBS with a 41 BMI. I'm down about 80 LBS so far. At this point I can eat anything without a lot of trouble. Breads can be tough so I avoid them but have found this isn't much of a burden since I never cared one way or another about breads.
I eliminated carbonated soda (except for the occasional sugar free Red Bull) because they cause gas and most Dr's recommend against them anyway. Again, I was surprised that it wasn't that hard to give up sodas - I drink a LOT of Crystal Light now. Those single serving packets are a great product.
The most difficult adjustments for me have been the following:
- I have to be careful about eating too fast especially when eating any kind of meat - chicken being the worst since it's easy to overcook.
- It can be difficult to get enough protein. I had to try a lot of kinds of protein supplements before finding one that I could use without getting sick of it.
- It is difficult to force yourself to drink enough liquids (64 oz or more daily)
- Eating out is tricky. You have to re-learn what you can eat and how much.
I haven't had any complications related to the surgery. I was in and out of the hospital in 24 hours and back to work in 5 days. I have some heartburn but I had that before surgery too so I don't know if this is related to the VSG or not. I take a prescription medicine, Prevacid, which completely eliminates the heartburn. Many people don't even need a prescription to deal with that.
Alcohol will work very differently after surgery. Most Dr's prefer that you not drink after surgery at all. Post WLS patients absorb alcohol very quickly since it goes straight to the intestines and doesn't stay in the stomach. We can get drunk on only one drink, believe it or not. I can personally attest to the truth of this. Some post-WLS guys say they have a different experience but for me, one drink is the maximum unless I want to feel it the next day. There was a Stanford study released last week on this subject you should check out just so you are aware. Link follows:

If you have any specific questions you can email me and I'd be happy to answer. I have found this Mens forum to be really a great resource too, so visit often.

I am 51 and had the VSG 3 and 1/2 months ago. I started at 280 lbs. and have lost 55 lbs. with DAILY EXERCISE. I returned to work the next week, but was very tired. I would suggest taking off 10 days or so if you can. I eat anything, just small amounts. Think like you are feeding a 6 year old. I use no supplemental protein except for a couple of bars some afternoons. I take a multi vitamin daily and try to have a balanced diet, heavy on protein and with very low carbs. I try to eat a few nuts daily, drink at a min one large glass of milk and 2 servings of vegs. and one of fruit. Often if I eat out for lunch I will finish lunch at dinner. Today I had 1/2 of a hamburger for lunch and some pudding for a treat.
