Did I screw up???

Hey all - I am set for the RNY tomorrow June 25th.  I am getting nervous, but I know all will be good.  I must say, I am more scared of the catheter (I'm 37 and my spelling still sucks) than I am of the surgery.  Dont know y, is that normal?? My screw up is this - I have been on a liquid diet all week.  I weighed in Sunday the 17th at 402 and when I weighed in today at 386.  BUT - yesterday I went to a b-day party and ate 2 hot dogs (no bread) and a chicken nugget.  I have not gone #2 in 3 days due to the liquid diet.  I went #2 today.  Will there be any issues with the meat?  What I mean is, will there still be anything in my stomach that I need to worry about? Thanks for any advise....

I doubt it, but you may want to mention it to your surgeon.  I didn't have to go on a liquid diet prior to surgery and my starting weight was over 570 lbs.  I think I only had to fast for 12 hours before my RNY.  I hope you hear from some of the guys who have had recent surgeries.

The main reason for the "fast" is that your surgeon needs your liver to shrink to do a Lap procedure.  Rapid weight loss just before surgery (even as little as 10 lbs) shrinks the size of the liver and enables the surgeon to more easily perform a Lap RNY on you.   I highly doubt that eating something yesterday will screw with the surgery tommorrow, but you might want to mention it to your surgeon.  Scott

What Scott said. YOu can do what my surgeon had me do, if your surgery is tomorrow, take one dose of Milk of Magnesia at noon today, and another one before bedtime tonight.  But talk to your surgeon first. Good luck!

Sean, Pre-Op anxiety can cause folks to focus on a wild range of stuff. The Catheter?   A Non-issue. You’ll be out under anesthesia when they insert it, and either still out or on pain meds when they take it out. It’s the thought of it that bothers folk.  I’ve had a about 6 times in the hospital where they had to use one on me. Most times, I never even knew it. A couple of times I was wise awake and alert when they had to put one in, and 5 times I was fully alert when they were removed.  No Biggie any of those times.  Big pull and it’s over.  The food still in the digestive tract?  Just mention to the doc.  Any “bowel prep” on your doc’s protocol? Like are you having to drink the ‘Go-Litely’ Laxative today?  For most, the pre-surgical directive of – “No food or drink, night before surgery  is all that is crucial. The ‘liquid diet’ is typically to shrink the liver prior to surgery. Have the greatest on Monday. Relax, breathe, and try to get some sleep tonight. Have the Greatest! Best Wishes- Dx

Hello, I'm also scheduled tomorrow and been on the liquid diet for the past two weeks.  With my liquid diet I was to have four shakes per day and one meal that was aprx. 500 calories.  I also was not put on anything to 'clean me out' the day before surgery.  Just nothing to eat or drink after midnight.   I think every surgeon is  different in regards to what they request a patient to do preop.  If I had to guess, i think your hot dogs and chicken nugget will be fine.  But just my opinion.  Steve

You are certainly not the first and won't be the last to get nervous and depart from the pre-op diet. It should not be a problem, but keep yourself on the wagon now and tell your surgeon. I am not a doctor, but I believe your stomach and upper intestines are pretty much cleaned out within 12 hours of any consumption. The liquid pre-op diet is mostly to shrink your liver, which it sounds like you should have accomplished. Good luck, I am sure you will do fine! JP

thanks for the words.  It all helps.  I will tell the dr tomorrow.  I did not have to take anything to clean me out.  I guess the liquid thingie was to take care of the most of that.  I also cant eat or drink after midnite.   Ill post on Tuesday and let yall know the outcome.

Funny thing is that I did not know about the catheter till the nurse came to pull it out of course this was at my second sugery then they opened me up first one I did not have one. Do not worry you will not feel them put it in. But to be honest it was not much fun coming out first time I had ever had anything like that. I told my wife I felt sorry for whomever had to put it in because it is so cold in the or I am sure they had to fi**** out because it was hiding like a turtle. Good Luck.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, you'll be a mile from them, and you'll have their shoes.
