Any men with the DS here?

Hi all, I'm planning to have a DS sometime this fall and was wondering if any other guys here have had it.  I keep looking under usernames but I keep seeing RNY with a few Lap Bands mixed in.  Assuming any of you are out there, could you answer the following? Would you still choose the DS over the RNY if you could do it over? How long were you off work after the surgery?  What type of work?  I ask the latter because I sit in front of a computer all day so it isn't physical labor. Have you found any good recipe books specifically geared toward DS instead of just WLS?  I know DSers can eat different foods than with other surgeries but all the books seem geared toward RNY. Thanks for the help, Rodney

There are a few men that float around that had the DS, most of them hang out on the DS forum...or on www.duodenalswitch.com  Would I choose the DS over the RNY.....yes.  This isn't about whose surgery is better, but it's about which surgery was better for me. (you can read my profile, I go indepth early on in my profile about why I chose the DS).  The long terms results of weight loss maintence are higher for the DS then any other surgery, and all of the most recent studies show that the DS is a superior surgery for the Super Morbidly Obese...of which I was one...in terms of total weight lost, and total weight lossed retained.  How long you need off depends on you, and if you have an open surgery or a Lap surgery.  Lap surgery patients can normally return to work within a couple of weeks, open normally requires a month off....it also depends on how you heal.  There are some who've had open surgeries and can go back to work in a week, and there are others who've had lap surgeries and are out for a month.   Most of the cook books out there are geared towards RNYers or lapbanders, honestly you really don't need "special" preparation books...but if you really need a recipe book, I'd say go for an Atkin's type book.  The first several months you will be spending most of your time getting in protein....you'll need your food to be soft, and you'll probably need to take protein suppliments (i.e. protein shakes).   Most DSers eat high fat, high protein, lower carb diets.  Fat is malabsorbed so it's almost like a "free" food ...simple carbs slow down weight loss so you'll probably want to limit them until your at or near goal....not that I don't enjoy sweets...but for the first 5 or 6 months post op, I really did spend most of my time avoiding them.  I don't prepare my food any special way...actually I've started cutting back on my families fat intake because I don't want them gaining weight (but i still prepare my food the same way).  I fry a lot, and eat a lot of deep fried foods....I do eat a lot of salads with regular dressing, with protein.  Dense proteins were an issue for me the first 3 months (dense meaning white meat chicken, roasted pork, and ground beef), but now I can eat all of those things without issue.   A crock pot comes in handy early on post op...because slow stewed meats are easily eaten as opposed to dry roasted meats.  Anyway, feel free to ask any questions you might have....good luck with your surgery. Thanks for the help.  I chose the DS because primarily for my food options.  I liked having fewer limitations while still losing weight.  I will check out the Adkins recipes.  Will also post my questions on the DS board. Thanks again, Rodney
