Fathers Day Food Recap

Good Morining (at least it is here) Gentlemen: Well I hope all you fathers had a great day yesterday.  Considering all things mine (I have a son who is 29 and a daughter who will be 26 in 10 days).  My son who lives in Portsmouth, NH called me twice yesterday telling me how sorry he was for not being able to make it back to Ohio this weekend, but that he was going to be here in 2-3 weeks and that I he had been to the LL Bean store in Maine and was bringing me something "Very Cool" (Can you get a 16' wood and canvas OLD TOWN Canoe on a airplane?),  but would not even give me a hint.  Don't have any idea where he learned to be so nasty....  My daughter, who is a Sous Chef at Marcella's Ristorante here in Columbus, called Friday and said the only way I would get to see her on Fathers Day was to come to the restaurant, so she made reservations for us (The "Wife Unit" and I).  This restaurant (Part of The Cameron MItchell Group of restaurant) just opened 3 weeks ago and it was the first time we had been there.  As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm five years out from my surgery (430-260 or so now),but that does not mean I have quit liking food or appreciating a quailty dining establishment.  Just can't do it (or want to) in the quanity that I once did.  Also, Erin (my daughter) would never serve me anything that is really evil for me or in portion sizes that I should not attempt.  But it was quite a dining experience.  Started with a really good Manhatten (tossed the wife my car keys immediately, alcohol tolerance ya know) and really enjoyed it.  Next had a sampling of various Italian cold cuts(sliced super thin), olives, and cheese (some really good stinky ones that I have no idea how to pronounce their names) and a little bread dipped in great olive oil.  Next a great mixed green salad (we split this) along with a glass of great "Dago Red".  Dinner for me was gnocci (1/2 order) seasoned a little panchetta, capors, herbs, and  one meatball (five years ago this would have been a plate of meatballs).  The wife had veal (I did steal a couple of bites of this evil breaded and fried meat) and desert was a small piece of mozzerela  cheese  cake with fresh berries.   All in all  I  behaved my self well.  So for  some of  you  newbies  wondering if you will  ever be able to enjoy food again.... Yes you can, but in moderation and not everbody can tolerate some of the things that others can.  I have to watch sugar and lactose (cant eat ice cream, so no gellato for me at the restaurant).  but I can tolerate fried foods and fatty items with out getting sick, so I have to be careful and think before I eat.  Also, being five years out, my pouch has stretched to the point where I can eat 8-9 oz at a time, so I have to watch my portion sizes.  Sorry for being so wordy but just felt like talking about eating out for those of you who might be intrestred.. Also, if you are in Columbus any time soon, you must try Marcellas',  it is really a great place to eat. Steve

Steve, Sounds like you had a wonderful Father's Day.  Thanks for sharing your dining experience.  Marcellas sounds like a nice restaurant.  Hope to make it there sometime.  I'm curious as to what your son is bringing you, let us know. Floyd

Steve, I’m a relative ‘newbie’ only 4 years post-op And eat very similar. Just about the same—‘anything but sugar’ seems to work fine, Just in smaller portions than Pre-Op. So Far? So Good. Sounds like a Great Fathers day! Congratulations! Best Wishes- Dx

Sounds like a great meal! My wife gave me the choice of eating out or cooking me something special. We went to the grocery store seeking out beef tenderloin but I spotted a ready to bake meatloaf in the butcher case and my cheap genes kicked in and said "oh that looks great" so meatloaf and wild rice it was for dinner. The meatloaf tasted great, but was pretty greasy, within ten minutes I knew I had "done" it and I had to sleep it off .....Oh, well....that was the first time, I have dumped off of fat, I had only dumped from sugar before...I guess it is a good thing though, too much sugar and fat is what led to my problems in the first place!

Sure beats the hell out of cold pizza and mex chips and black bean dip.

Bob, Oh I don't know, with enough icy cold brown bottles of adult beverage, cold pizza, chips and black bean dip can be classifed as "haute cusine".  Back in the "college days" cold pizza (must be left in the box on the floor all night) with chocolate mike was a favorite breafast... Steve

Wow that was far better than what i ended up eating, I was at my father-in-law house, for the traditional "ham and cheese on hard rolls"  Since I meat and me don't get along far too frequently I decided to play in safe and just have a couple slices of cheese without the hard rolls since its just white bread roll not worth the extra calories, I thought for sure they would have swiss or cheddar, but no the person in charge of cheese decided that cheap a$$ American slices would work so that is what they bought, and what I had,  oh and I was a bad boy, I also had a piece of cream cheese danish, yes it went down awesome I'm one of the ones with a curse, I don't dump on sugar or excess fat.  The day before I was also over at his house along with the rest of family giving his yard a make over, 6 hours of hard labor, Got to have the fun of  removing 6 railroad ties that were buried 18" deep, don't ask me why so deep. It was a hard but semi-fun workout, before surgery I don't think I could of got out one, but this time me and my son got out all 6 only took about 2-3 hours of digging and swinging a sledge hammer, but the good news I finally broke my 3 week long plateau, the next morning I weighted 4 lbs less  YEAH!!!
